First edition, 3 vols., bound in 4, 4to (279 x 185 mm), ONE OF 100 COPIES PRINTED ON THICK AND LARGE PAPER WITH EXTRA PLATES, [4], xxv, [7], 462,lxxix, [1]; [2], 555, [1]; [2], 298; [2], 299-622, lxiipp., with the author's wood-engraved device on each title-page, a wood engraving of the elaborately-quartered coat of arms of the Roxburghe Club on the dedication page, 85 engraved plates ((including the private plate of 'Diana de Poictiers' in vol. 2, which was apparently destroyed after only 50 copies had been printed, and a proof of the 'Prater' plate in vol. 3), 62 illustrations printed on fine and thin "India" paper and mounted on the text leaves, 55 other illustrations in the text, with the additional sixty engraved plates on 52 leaves from Lewis' Series of Groups bound in at the appropriate places as designated by Lewis in his 'Directions to the binder', contemporary notes in pencil to several endpapers and a few within the text, text and plates have staining of varying degrees, pale stain to many lower margins, a little damage to endpapers where bookplates have been removed, full red hard grain red morocco,,covers waterstained, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Unfortunately this handsome large paper copy has suffered from water damage sometime in the past, additional photographs are available upon request. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis, of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books, manuscripts, buildings, other artefacts and people, both from past centuries and from the author's own day, for the extraordinary collection of illustrations, mostly drawn during the tour itself, and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared, leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship, especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour, and his own interpretations and conclusions, which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm, readable style and entertaining anecdotes, moreover, caught the mood of his age, making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups... was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. Early edition of this exceedingly rare Persian-Turkish lexicon, which was one of the earliest Persian dictionaries in the Islamic world, written by Hasan Suuri Efendi from Aleppo, one of the finance officers of the Ottoman Empire. First edition was printed in 1742 and was the last book in two volumes of the first Islamic printing house founded by Ibrahim Müteferrika. This copy is the second edition. All published. The first edition of the Opera in the original Greek appeared in 1551 Paris Stephanus. The first Latin edition appeared in 1554 Basel Dupuys the second the Galen-edition in 1555 Basel Hier. Froben & Nic. Episcopius and the third the Langi-edition in 1565. This is probably the best of the Latin editions and the Latin version of the Opera by Jo. Langi was also used for the standard Greek-Latin parallel editions of 1593 and 1615. Justin the Martyr 100 - 165 AD was a Christian philosopher who was brought up a pagan. He is primarily known for his dailogues and his apologies all of which are present here. The apologies constitute the earliest Christian ones of some length. He died a martyr in Rome after having been condemned a Christian by Q. Junius Rusticus. As a philosopher he dealt with Stocism Aristotelianism and Pythagoreanism before he meant to have found the truth in Platonism. Philosophically he is most interesting in his attempt to unite Christianity with philosophy i.e. Platonism as Boethius did a few centuries later and Justin actually anticipates the philosophy of history of Origin ca. 185 - ca. 255 and Eusebius ca. 260 - 340. He is very interesting when viewed as a thinker who represents the union of philosophy and thought with the new religious attraction in the Eastern part of the Empire under Antonius Pius i.e. Christianity.Graesse III:515 Adams J:497 not in Brunet. </em> hardcover

An extremely rare compilation of puzzles and oddities designed to occupy the mind during the 'blank hours of life'. Printed at the home of Nathaniel Brown Engleheart of Blackheath, on the little Parlour press, the author gives "An Apology in lieu of a Preface. Kind Reader! be not severely censorious. ? This little book has the production of the 'lighter' hours of a nearly 'worn out' mind that prays your lenience. ? It has been the result of endeavours to escape idleness, and to occupy those blank hours of life which in a greater or lesser degree assail all. In this respect its purpose has been fulfilled. ? It entertains no hope of 'Approval', it aspires only to 'Indulgence'.". The only other copy located is that of the British Library.

A Shanghai expat's otherwise unrecorded tribute to his goddaughter inscribed by the author on the first blank "To Irene from Stewart with all good wishes. 22nd October 1919 Shanghai". G. Stewart Jones "G.S.J." in the imprint ran the Shanghai office of the chemicals giant Brunner Mond & Co. Jones composed his poems in Shanghai Tianjin on the Yangtze River and in England. His collection is a rare surviving example of the bespoke luxury printing and bookbinding service provided by Kelly & Walsh Asia's largest publisher-printer. Octavo pp. 16. Contents printed in blue. With eleven plates ten of which are beautifully chromolithographed including three plates with richly illustrated ornamental borders and hand-drawn gilt accents. The eleventh plate is printed in brown with a floral frame for an ownership signature. That plate is attractively hand-illustrated in color and gilt with the text "Laure & Oscar 29 Octobre 1862" in manuscript. Some toning to versos and margins of plates. Otherwise a fine bright copy of a scarce book in a matching custom slipcase and chemise. Henri Léon Curmer 1801 – 1870 is best remembered for publishing a landmark chromolithographed edition of L'Imitation de Jesus-Christ 1856 printed by Joseph Lemercier and Jules Claye. McLean calls Curmer's publication a "masterpiece of French chromolithography…in which over four hundred pages are decorated in almost every known style of ornamentation in up to fourteen colors" including medieval Renaissance and Islamic examples Victorian Book Design p. 166. In A History of Chromolithography 2013 Michael Twyman wrote that the book "took chromolithography into new territory" and required an enormous amount of labor and resources p. 158. Archive of 89 coated labels sized from 2.25 x 3.5 in. up to 6.25 x 8.5 in. with many in the middle ranges including distinctive 5.25 in. rounds most colour lithographs some with metallic inks nearly all retaining the original adhesive from never having been applied to luggage in assorted shapes many round others rectangular square diamond shaped etc. most on thin coated paper stock all NF condition from the library of Archibald Angus MacDonald 1892-1977 stepson of famed southern California oil man William F. Byrne as well as oil company and drilling equipment company owner and manager of MacDonald & Burns Oil Producers. A delightful and remarkably colourful small archive of fine lithographed and colour printed luggage labels preserved from over three decades of ocean liner travel by the well-to-do California oil family. Their frequent voyages carried them to Hawaii Asia South Asia Africa Europe and the Americas preserving luggage labels souvenir brochures and more along the way. At the time they were an essential advertising campaign largely driven by the popular Grand Hotels and were often illustrated by such renowned commercial and graphic artists as Dan Sweeney and Mario Borgoni. Included amongst these are iconic labels for the historic Park Hotel depicting jockeys racing on the Shanghai Club race track in front of the iconic Art Deco building completed in 1934; The Cathay & The Metropole in Shanghai operated by Cathay Hotels Ltd.; the historic Peninsula Hotel in Kowloon Hong Kong opened in 1928 and founded by the brothers Ellis & Elly Kadoorie still considered one of the finest hotels east of the Suez; or beautiful scenic labels created for the Eastern & Oriental Hotel the “E&O†still considered one of the finest hotels in Southeast Asia and the Oriental Hotel in Kobe Japan. Also present are labels for the Raffles Hotel in Singapore originally opened in 1887 Mrs. Ch’ien’s Guest House located originally not far from the Legation Quarter in Peking Maidens Hotel Delhi the splendid Clark’s Hotel Benares Varanasi still considered the finest heritage hotel in the city and the Imperial Hotel of New Delhi opened in 1936 designed by F.B. Blomfield. The MacDonald’s visited the Philippines several times often staying the Manila Hotel Hawaii where the Royal Hawaiian and the Kiluaea Volcano House were their places of choice and frequently stated at The Biltmore in Los Angeles after returning from trips the Plaza in Buenos Aires the Waldorf in New York and many of the major European Hotels. Also present are labels for the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo Sri Lanka founded in 1865 featuring the historic south wing designed by Edward Skinner and one of the oldest hotels East of Suez. South Africa was a stopover during their 1952 Great Africa-India Cruise on the RMS Caronia and labels include Polley’s Hotel Pretoria the Imperial Hotel in Pietermaritzburg and the North Western Hotel Livingstone N. The rest of the text which is entirely in French is typeset. A lovely French-Japanese collaboration created at the moment that Tokyo was crushed by earthquake and fire. The inside border is surrounded by twenty vignettes in oval borders. Vignettes include animals such as a fox and an owl as well as scenes such as a soldier leading an army a king holding his scepter a face in the clouds blowing wind at the trees. Spotted at lower left corner and another light spot. Very Good. <br/><br/> This poem is a dialogue between Charles and Father concerning the reformation of Neighbor Joe a former drunk who would curse and beat his wife and children.
