The plates depict the typefounding process and the alphabets and characters of more than 40 languages from Assyrian and Hebrew to Chinese Tibetan Japanese and Bengali; the explanatory text gives a concise account of the various arts and a more detailed account of linguistic scholarship current in the mid- to late eighteenth century. Printing and the Mind of Man describes the Encyclopedie as "a monument in the history of European thought; the acme of the age of reason; a prime motive force in undermining the ancien régime and in heralding the French Revolution; a permanent source for all aspects of eighteenth-century civilization." An illustration by Tomita Keisen and a page reproducing Claudel's script were cut into woodblocks by the master Igami Bonkotsu as well as the title design by Noemi Pernessin and a series of text illustrations by Audrey Parr. The rest of the text which is entirely in French is typeset. A lovely French-Japanese collaboration created at the moment that Tokyo was crushed by earthquake and fire. First edition, 8vo (235 x 145mm), viii, 139, [1]pp., text browned as usual, orig. cloth, orig. printed label (effaced), rubbed, uncut, overall a very good copy of this scarce work. Isaac Leeser (1806-1868), a distinguished author, translator, editor, and a national leader of the American Jewish community, considered himself, first and foremost, an educator. This being his first published work since arriving in America, the first English translation of a textbook on the religious instruction of Jewish children. Provenance: Ink signature of Jos. Crown 8vo (246 x 150 mm), ff. 63, tipped-in is a small folio sheet (280 x 213 mm) printed of one side only "Prices of Type and Materials Manufactured and Sold by Stephen Sutton & Co. at the Caxton Letter Foundry...", later quarter red morocco, green boards. A very rare specimen of printing types from this little known foundry. The specimen begins with 34 samples of different size font from "the most modern faces, cut by artists of first-rate skill and acknowledged talent." Then follows 27 priced specimens of "a beautiful and extensive assortment of Stereotype Ornaments." The tipped-in price list is printed in double-column and gives prices for type, wood type, leads' and metal furniture, galleys, brass rule, cases, frames, and furniture. At the foot is a list of "Agents for the Country": Mr. Joseph Graham, 2 Jewry Street, Aldgate; Mr Simmons, Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate Street; Messrs. Renshaw and Kirkman, Budge Row; Messrs. Shepherd and Sutton, Foster Lane. Provenance: From the typographical library of John Lewis (his bookplate) and John Brinkley (his signature). The only other copy recorded is that of The British Library.

Über VD 16 nur 3 Exemplare dieser Variante nachweisbar (Göttingen, Jena, ÖNB). - Offizielle Gegendarstellung des Augsburger Rates zur im Vorjahr erschienenen Schrift "Augspurgische Händel" des ehemaligen Augsburger Pastors und Superintendenten Georg Mylius (eigtl. Müller, 1548-1607). Die Stadt wehrt sich gegen die darin erhobenen Vorwürfe und rechtfertigt die Ausweisung des protestantischen Theologen: Mylius hatte sich, als Papst Gregor XIII. 1582 den gregorianischen Kalender verordnete und Augsburg aus Kaisertreue die Reform übernahm, an die Spitze der örtlichen protestantischen Widerstandsbewegung gestellt, die den neuen Kalender zumindest für das Kirchenjahr boykottierte. "Darüber erbost, ließ der [Augsburger] Senat [Mylius] durch Bewaffnete aus der Stadt bringen, aber die Bürger befreiten ihn und führten ihn im Triumph zurück. Doch wurde er gezwungen, am 28. Mai 1584 die Stadt zu verlassen. Mylius wandte sich nach Ulm, wo er freundliche Aufnahme fand [...] Im Juni 1585 [folgte er] einem Rufe als Prediger und Professor in Wittenberg" (ADB 23, 143). Verfasser ist lt. Holzmann/B. der Augsburger Jurist Georg Tradel (1530-98; vgl. Jöcher IV, 1291). - Hinterdeckel und letzte Bll. mit kl. Wurmgang. Titel mit alter hs. Datierung "1637". A rare example of a Republican-era printer's sampler offering clients a wide range of German lithographic inks to print half-tones and text. Founded in 1915 Wah-Foong operated out of the British Concession and had a production plant and a Nanjing branch. In 1927 it moved the plant to 100 Lincoln Road Shanghai the address given on the front cover of this example. After the 1949 revolution the plant was absorbed into the state-run printing system as Shanghai Number One Matrix Plant. Landscape quarto. With dozens of leaves printed with specimen colours; blanks with cover sheets at end for mounting additional samples. Text in Chinese. Original red card wrappers front cover printed in black and white. Old shelf label on spine pencil annotations in text.
