Very rare first printing copy of this, one of the earliest titles from Alison Uttley's much loved Little Grey Rabbit Series. Only the bottom inch of backstrip remains. Single piece of beige tape connects boards at top of spine. Average wear and soiling externally otherwise. Front endpaper and several pages bear child's markings in red pencil. We have attempted to erase several of these markings with decent success. We are happy to provide digital images upon request. Contemporary gift greetings atop first blank leaf. Erased lead pencil scribbling to page 98 is lightly visible. Overall, a worthy copy. Book

This edition was published by Claude Charles Thiboust, his father, Cluade Louis Thiboust, was the author of the poem, and had originally printed it in 1718. The family of Thilboust occupies a distinguished place in the list of French typographers, having started printing in Paris in the middle of the sixteenth century, with successive members of the family being appointed to be Printers to the University. This is followed by two editions of Doissen's poem on engraving. Bigmore & Wyman, III, p. 8; I, p. 183

Two volumes, complete. The "goig" is a typical Catalan art form ("gozo" in Spanish), dating back to the 16th century. It is a broadsheet with a printed poem dedicated to a specific saint, and illustrated with woodcuts or metalcuts. During the 20th century Ricard Vives Sabate was the only artist who kept this tradition alive. These two portfolios contain ten of his goigs, dedicated to those saints most venerated in Catalonia: Sant Jordi (St. George), La Nostra Senyora de Montserrat (Our Lady of Montserrat), Santa Eulalia, Santa Cecilia, Sant Ricard, La Mare de Deu de la Merce, Santa Anna, Sant Josep Oriol, Sant Oleguer, and Sant Lluis. Each of the goigs is printed by hand and illustrated with several metalcuts. From a total edition of 255 copies, each of these portfolios is one of only FIVE copies with the goigs printed on parchment and beautifully hand-illuminated in color and heightened with gold. Furthermore, each of the goigs is signed by the artist. Folio, hand-made paper wraps (also decorated with hand-illuminated metalcuts). Fine and bright, with no defects.
18001744c.1800. Eight decorative writing sheets of laid paper with elaborate engraved decorative borders with hand-colouring each contemporaneously mounted to card with pink and blue coloured paper edges and a blank sheet of laid paper affixed to the rear. The group including five different designs. Each measuring between 36.5 x 26cm and 33 x 24cm. Three apparently unused the other five with contemporary cut blank paper sections affixed to the central panels presumably to cover previous manuscript text/signs of use. There is rubbing to the coloured paper edging and some occasional light finger marking and dust soiling otherwise condition is very good indeed. A visually striking collection of writing sheets dating to the close of the eighteenth century most likely French decorated with vibrantly hand-coloured engraved Rococo borders incorporating fairies cherubs and sphinxes. Their particular use in this instance is somewhat unclear although being mounted to stiff card and with some having replaced sections to the blank panel it possible that they were being utilised as menu cards. unknown
502510 August 1915 to 23 November 1917. Clowes is an eminent firm of English printers founded in London in 1803 and still thriving in Suffolk. The twelve typed letters are each one page quarto on the firm's Duke Street letterhead. The autograph letter is one page 12mo with mourning border. The collection in good condition overall with a few items aged and lightly creased. Most items docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. All items except the circular signed by 'W A Clowes' who he informs Wood in his first letter has taken over from his cousin Captain W. C. Knight Clowes whose copy of the First Folio was subsequently bought by William Foyle. The collection provides an fascinating insight into the effect of the Great War on the printing trade with Clowes reluctantly announcing repeated increases in costs. In the third letter 21 October 1915 he states: 'We wish to wait and see what the effect of Lord Derby's recruiting scheme will be on the printing trade because if many more men are taken from it the cost of production will again be greatly increased . I am glad to say that for the moment we have a stock of the old Journal paper at the usual price'. Letter four 14 August 1918 warns of 'another large rise in wages in the London District in the near future' and letter five 27 March 1918 confirms 'the large increase in wages that the printing and binding trades have been compelled to grant their workpeople. All materials used in printing and binding have again risen and are still rising . we shall be obliged to raise our prices to you for printing and binding by a considerable percentage'. Letter six 20 March 1918 responds to a complaint from Menzies regarding the printing of the Journal's wrappers: 'I . cannot in any way defend the printing. I was having the matter thoroughly looked into before your letter came and the type renovated'. He complains that 'labour is so scarce' but promises that he will be 'keeping an eye on it until it is done properly'. Letter of 13 June 1917 announces '15% extra on composition machining and binding owing to the increases in wages which took place previously to October 1916 and the large increase that took place then and the still larger increase which had to be paid on this June 1st'. A printed circular announces another rise of 15% from 31 October 1917 'owing to the further increases in War Bonuses and the never ceasing increases in the cost of all materials'. On 28 March 1917 Clowes warns that the firm has 'only sufficient paper in stock to take us to about June 30th' and that 'prices will rise very sharply immediately owing to the great scarcity of materials'. In the handwritten letter which ends the series Clowes thanks Menzies for his 'kind letter of sympathy with us on the sad loss we have sustained by the death of my Cousin Mr Knight Clowes. I note with pleasure that you intend to insert a short obituary notice of him in your Journal. You may have seen the one in "The Times" for Wednesday last'. 10 August 1915 to 23 November 1917. unknown
