First (only?) edition, 12, [1, list of instruments with prices], [1, blank]pp., recent paper wrappers. John Dicas was a scientific instrument maker, active in Liverpool, between 1774 and 1797. He was succeeded by his daughters Mary and Ann, who continued to operate the business until some time after 1837 when it was then taken over by Joseph Long. In 1780 John Dicas was awarded UK patent 1,259 for "constructing hydrometers with sliding-rules to ascertain spirit strength". (Hopp, 'Slide Rules. Their History, Models, and Makers'. 1999). A printed thirteen-line "Caution" on verso of the title-page warns against instruments on sale in London and Dublin stamped "Dicas" which are not of of her [Mary Arstall] manufacture. Not traced in Copac or OCLC.

I, Gosford book label on both front endpapers, inscribed on front endpaper in a small, neat hand "Acheson / Ch. Ch. 1826 - Large Paper / Bound by C. Lewis", old small circular stamp on title-pages, shelf label removed, faint foxing of titles but otherwise a bright and fresh, contemporary full dark blue morocco, gilt lettered spines, inside gilt borders, edges gilt, a handsome set. Archibald Acheson, 3rd Earl of Gosford (1806?64), MP for Co. Armagh from 1830 to 1847, formed, at Gosford Castle, "a large and extremely beautiful library which was sold by private contract in 1878 to the London bookseller James Toovey... the history, topography, natural history and the important series of books on large paper were dispersed by Puttick and Simpson (21 April 1884), the total for 3363 lots being over ?11,000." ? Thick 8vo, 24pp., followed by [212] leaves (mostly printed on one side only), a couple of samples excised from to leaves, orig. decorated cloth, gilt, a very good copy. This specimen book presents a fine and extensive example of the period. Provenance: From the library of Ruari McLean with his signature to front-endpaper.
First Edition, [ii],115,[1]pp., frontis., unopened. Large 8vo, 2 Vols., in one, orig. embossed cloth, re-backed with the original spine laid-down. Bigmore & Wyman (III p.12.) says of the first work "One of the most interesting works a printer can possess; while laying no claim to originality, it is full of anecdote and historical facts."

Tear in tissue guard.L'Estampe Moderne was published monthly between 1897 and 1899 at the Imprimerie Champenois of Paris. Each edition cost 3.50 francs and contained four original lithographic prints in wrappers designed by Mucha. Around two thousand of each of the 24 fascicles were produced bringing affordable prints largely in an Art Nouveau style to the masses.It is not to be confused with another publication of the same name which was published over five fascicles between November 1895 and March 1896 by Loÿs Delteil. Collected in butternut squash wrappers and bound with three staples slightly rusted. Covers have wear along all edges and a small tear without loss on the front.
