He began by drawing sports and political drawings for The Salt Lake Tribune when he was just 16 years old. Held moved to New York City in 1910 where he went on to gain notoriety for his drawings in the popular magazines "Life" "The New Yorker" "Vanity Fair" "Judge" and "College Humor." A wonderful almanac issued by the Greek-language National Herald considered the paper of record for the Greek communities living in the United States particularly New York. The almanac is printed entirely in Greek and includes information typical for almanacs: schedules of upcoming cultural events a holiday schedule and so forth. There are also numerous stories poems and articles throughout focused of course on the Greek community with numerous illustrations and photographs decorating the text throughout.
