Hal Fischer's Gay Semiotics: A Photographic Study of Visual Coding Among Homosexual Men (1977) is one of the most important publications associated with California conceptual photography in the 1970s. This new edition reproduces the look and feel of the original volume, which reconfigured into a book format the 24 text-embedded images of Fischer's 1977 photographic series Gay Semiotics. The photographs in Gay Semiotics present the codes of sexual orientation and identification Fischer saw in San Francisco's Castro and Haight Ashbury districts, ranging from such sexual signifiers as handkerchiefs and keys to depictions of the gay fashion "types" of that era--from "basic gay" to "hippie" and "jock." Gay Semiotics also features Fischer's critical essay, which is marked by the same wry, anthropological tone found in the image/text configurations. Fischer's book circulated widely, finding a worldwide audience in both the gay and conceptual art communities.
Fischer's insistence on the visual equivalence of word and image is a hallmark of the loose photography and language group that included Fischer, Lutz Bacher, Lew Thomas and others working in the San Francisco Bay Area. First published as an artist's book in 1978 by NFS Press, at a time when gay people had been forced to both evaluate and defend their lifestyles, Gay Semiotics earned substantial critical and public recognition. Thirty-seven years later, the book remains a proactive statement from a voice within the gay community from a moment in history just before the devastation wrought by AIDS.
Hal Fischer (born 1950) grew up in Highland Park, Illinois. He arrived in San Francisco in 1975 to pursue an MA in photography at San Francisco State. Through his work as an art reviewer and photographer, he soon became embedded in the Bay Area's artistic and intellectual scene. He continues to live and work in San Francisco. — Testi: Fischer Hal. pagg. 56; BN; rileg. brossura. Editore: Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles, 2015.

Gift inscription from Volk to R. E. Fantham in pencil to titlepage. Pencil marginalia to a few pages. Creasing along upper edge of DJ. DJ spine a bit sunned. '2006' written in pen to front panel of DJ. ; Columbia Studies in the Classical Tradition; 222 pages; This volume contains ten essays by an international group of scholars on various aspects of the work of L. Annaeus Seneca the Younger, the famous (some would say, notorious) Roman playwright, philosopher, and politician of the Claudian and Neronian periods. Approaching Seneca from a number of different angles, the authors endeavor both to illuminate individual aspects of the writer's enormous output and to discern common themes among the many different genres practiced by Seneca. Given its interdisciplinary approach, the collection is of interest to classicists, historians, and historians of philosophy alike.

You may know John Armleder as a Swiss artist whose work is emblematic of 80s Neo-Geo. Or you may know him as the artist who recently hung a disco ball at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. But this catalogue raisonna of Armleder's drawings shows how great a contribution he has made to shaping of the history of recent abstraction. Collecting almost 40 years of some 600 works on paper, the book traces Armleder's career through his Fluxus, Constructivist, "dot," and Neo-Geo periods, though it would be a mistake to pin any label on so versatile an artist and one who hasn't ever closed off a line of investigation. This branch of his oeuvre offers direct insight into his continued, often humorous confrontation with art, especially with the abstract and conceptual, and with the relationship of art to everyday reality. — Testi: Bovier Lionel, Ruf Beatrix. This encyclopedic book examines the history of performances by obscure Japanese artists in Japan from 1957 to 1970, with focus on the Anti-art movement in Japan in the 1960s. The book aims to place those artists in the cultural and political context of the anarchist tendencies of that era in Japan, which also manifested themselves in the contemporary counter-culture and political activism. The book consists of four sections. The first section points out the absence of performance art in the discussion of Japanese art history and art criticism and discusses the cause of such neglect. The second and third section presents the history of Japanese performance arts by documenting performance groups, art movements, and individual performance artists. The fourth section provides an analysis of political, cultural, and social backgrounds to the Anti-art performances and what it infers today. This book also includes photographs of performances, an index of artists, artist groups, and other items, and a chronological table of events spanning 30 years from 1945 to 1975. — Testi: Kuroda Raiji. This book collects some of R. Buckminster Fuller's most important recent writings on the subject of spaceship Earth: the big, interconnected, total system that is "the only one we've got." These articles stress the need for considering our planet as a whole, rather than breaking it into its parts-as most of us continue to do. This theme is crucial to the thinking of Bucky Fuller, who, in addition to his many other appellations, has been called the "godfather" of the Whole Earth Catalog. — Testi: Buckminster Fuller R..
