Elizabeth Fox Tuckett 1837-1872 was the sister of the well-known English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett 1834-1913 who regularly gathered a party of friends and family to accompany him on climbing expeditions. Elizabeth had a talent for drawing as well as a love of travel and produced four popular light-hearted books of which this was the first chronicling her adventures in the form of humorous sketches. Neate T66. Some creasing to cloth corners rubbed occasional foxing lacking rear free endpaper; overall about very good. Inscribed in light pencil on the front free endpaper "With heartfelt good wishes for the/New Year E.F. Tuckett iIllegible place name Dec. 30 1869." In addition Tuckett has written out the full names of the members of the expedition on the "Dramatis Personae" page where they are identified in print only by their initials. Rarely found signed. Mention "(o)" encadrée de deux dessins floraux en haut de chaque page. Intérieur relativement frais pour l'âge, texte entièrement lisible, coutures solides. Ce livre forme une série de réflexions qui voisinent entre Montaigne et La Bruyère. Évoquant pêle-mêle le sens de la vie, l'argent, le vin, les passions humaines, les pays européens ou encore l'incertitude de la vie. Noble suédois, le comte Johann Thuresson Oxenstierna (1666-1733) a rédigé ces pensées directement en français. La première édition parut en 1721. Devant le succès éditorial, le livre sera réédité du vivant de son auteur (c'est cette édition que nous proposons ici) puis de nouveau en 1750 sous le nom de Pensées, réflexions et maximes morales de Monsieur le Comte d'Oxenstirn. Un aperçu stimulant de l'époque et d'un esprit des plus curieux.
