Her domestic novels were very popular both at home and abroad and earned her the sobriquet "the Swedish Jane Austen." In 1849 Bremer visited the United States where she was welcomed in New England as a kindred spirit for her antislavery sentiments. There she met with Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry Wadsworth Longfellow James Russell Lowell and Nathaniel Hawthorne among others.
