The novel was also serialized in the weekly journal All the Year Round from April 30 to November 26 1859 and published in book form on 21 November 1859. A Tale of Two Cities is considered one of the greatest of Dickens' works and contains one of the most recognizable openings in the English language: "It was the best of times it was the worst of times." Originally released in parts after its completion A Tale of Two Cities became and remains one of the most widely read novels in history selling over two hundred million copies to date. The book follows events in London and Paris around the time of the French Revolution and Dickens used Thomas Carlyle's history of the French Revolution as both a source and inspiration. A complex novel of opposites and foils its exploration of national and individual identity selfish and selflessness love and sacrifice has inspired countless operas musicals and films including a 1935 movie nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Eckel pp. 86-90; Gimbel A142; Hatton & Cleaver p. 331; Kremers pp. 108-112 Sadleir 701; Smith 13. 18537266London: Bradbury & Evans 1853. First edition. Near Fine. Complete with all forty plates including the frontispiece title-page and the ten "dark plates." Has all three typographical errors associated with the first edition first issue: P.19 line 6: "elgble"; p. 209 line 23: "chair" instead of "hair"; and p. 275 line 22: "counsinship" instead of "cousinship." In a lovely example of the publisher's full purple morocco deluxe binding. All edges gilt yellow-coated end papers. In Near Fine unrestored condition with just light to moderate foxing throughout but generally an exceptional survivor.

One of Dickens' finest novels the action in Bleak House revolves around a never-ending set of related Chancery Court cases to resolve the inheritance of a considerable estate. Dickens turns his pen to a biting condemnation of the system and the need for reform which shouldn't surprise the Dickens scholar. A complex novel and filled with subplots it engages and titillates the reader from start to finish. Noted by some for Inspector Bucket's prominent role in investigating a murder which earned it a spot on the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of detective fiction the novel is also memorable for its complex representation of femininity: "There's more to Esther than simple good nature. As the book progresses she reveals a dark angry wit. It is a wit that can still strike a chord today" The Guardian. An important social commentary and Dickens at his best. Near Fine. A few old roughly horizontal folds small tear at the edge of one fold faint offsetting on verso from an old mat but a very nice near fine example. A broadside program for a performance of a play by Bulwer-Lytton written in 1851 and performed to benefit the Literary Guild a society for struggling authors. The performance of the Bulwer-Lytton play was best remembered for its cast which included Charles Dickens Wilkie Collins and fellow writers Peter Cunningham and Douglas Jerrold Punch editor Mark Lemon and artists Augustus Egg and John Tenniel. Dickens and Collins met for the first time during the opening night performance which was attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Performances of the plays were repeated on several additional occasions over the course of the following year for the charity this performance among them. The performances were advertised with broadsides that follow similar formats but each is rare. OCLC locates a single similar example each for the Derby and Sheffield performances two for Liverpool and two for Newcastle but no copies for the Manchester performance. Further searching appears to locate copies of the Manchester broadside at both the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Free Library of Philadelphia. Rare. Committee of the Manchester Athenaeum unknown

Stamped in gilt on the spine and with blind rules on the boards and spine. With original yellow-coated end papers. A lovely Near Fine copy overall. One spot of offsetting on the first couple leaves otherwise quite clean internally. A few of Hatton and Cleaver's first issue points to the later half of text; all plates in the Phiz states and with the later Chapman & Hall imprints. Given that the early parts continued to be reprinted and corrected while the later parts were produced it is common for the cloth-bound or publisher's morocco-bound copies to have most of the earlier misprints corrected as here.

Dickens' first novel showcasing his astounding talent for sketching charming sympathetic characters helped to launch his career. "Its main literary value and appeal was formed by its numerous memorable characters. The Pickwick Papers are mostly a series of humorous misadventures with a bit of satire that give some insight into the mores of Victorian society. You can witness Dickens here working on a few prototypes that will show up in later novels.you also see his social consciousness manifesting itself" Inverarity. An important early work that remains beloved by Dickens' fans for its sensationalism and humor. Near Fine. Chapman and Hall unknown

18439027004London: Chapman and Hall 1843. 3rd edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Bound in publisher's original red orange cloth with blind stamped covers and front cover and spine stamped in gilt. Four hand-colored plates by John Leech and four black and white wood engravings by W. J. Linton. A Christmas Carol has had an involved publishing history much to the delight of bibliographical detectives. According to John Eckel it was publishedon December 19th 1843 and sold 6000 copies on the first day. Before the end of the year eleven days later it was in the third edition with the combined number of copies of the second and third editions being estimated at only two to three thousand copies. This means that the second and third editions were at least two to three times scarcer than the first although not as complicated with the three states and trial copies that distinguished the first edition. During the haste of the early stages of production Dickens was trying to determine exactly how he wanted the book to appear and experimented with the color of end papers with red blue green and yellow eventually settling on yellow. On the title page he experimented with red green and blue eventually settling on red and blue as his preference. There were many textual errors corrected mostly in the second edition although not entirely. Binding variants were yet another issue. This copy has the title page printed in red and blue with the words "Third Edition" printed in blue. The end papers are yellow. This copy has the heading "Stave I" which was eventually changed to "Stave One." An error on page 49 line 2 was uncorrected remaining so in the third edition. It involved "and-bye ways" the hyphen being misplaced.

Chapman and Hall hardcover books
41823most probably Charles Dickens Kneller BURNETT 1841-1881 the son of his elder sister Fanny sending him "the desk I told you about. I hope you will like it and find everything you want inside. Also there are three books that I think very pretty to read. Perhaps. you may not be quite old enough yet to read them. Never mind. You will soon grow out of that for I never knew a boy yet who stood still in his age or got younger. I hope you will think of me sometimes when you use the desk or read the books and will say 'Oh what a jolly old Godfather!'." with a postscript under his signature "There's a flourish for you!" 2 sides 8vo. Devonshire Terrace 21st June On 13th May 1841 nine months after his sister Fanny Burnett became godmother to his third born child Kate Perugini Dickens acted as Godfather to her second child. Like his physically handicapped elder brother Henry on whom Dickens is supposed to have based the character of Paul Dombey Charles Dickens Kneller Burnett was baptised at Old St Pancras. The family moved to Manchester but moved back to London with the financial help of Dickens when Fanny became dangerously consumptive. She died in September 1848 and her bother Henry followed. six months later. Dickens wrote to his distraught brother in law of his godson "you have a brave fine boy to rear up still and God send that he may be a source of happiness to you.". Given the tone of the letter is is almost certain that he would be talking to a young boy rather than one of his other godsons who were older. This letter is not mentioned in the definitive Pilgrim Edition either in the appropriate place or in the appendix of additional discoveries. unknown

FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE. TALE OF TWO CITIES ranks amongst the most famous works in the history of literary fiction. It is one of only two works of historical fiction by Charles Dickens and stands out from most of Dickens's other novels as the one containing the least humour. That is not surprising as the historical context of the novel the French Revolution and Reign of Terror were a bit bleak to allow for the wackier characters Dickens is known for. This fact has in no way impacted the novel’s popularity it has never been out of print and by the start of the 21th century had sold an estimated 200 million copies worldwide.
