This adaptation was first performed in the fall of 1838 before the full text of Dickens' original novel published serially had been released in Bentley's Miscellany. The last installment appeared in April 1839. Philip Cox reports in Reading Adaptations Manchester University Press 2000 that Dickens attended a performance and was so horrified that "in the middle of the first scene he laid himself down upon the floor in the corner of the box and never rose from it until the drop scene fell." .
