br. "Great Expectations" è un romanzo che ha appassionato generazioni di lettori andando incontro ai mutamenti estetici e culturali di oltre un secolo e mezzo. Come ogni classico, è un testo che si arricchisce a ogni nuova lettura: la molteplicità di storie e di destini che si intrecciano alla vicenda di Pip, ellittica e sfuggente, l'abile gioco di distorsione di schemi rappresentativi e topoi letterari, uniti alla riflessione metatestuale, rendono il capolavoro dickensiano un'opera ricca di fascino e capace di suscitare sempre nuovi interrogativi. Il gran numero di riscritture e adattamenti testimonia una parte delle risposte prodotte dai suoi lettori: la ricerca di un riscatto per i personaggi di Estella e Magwitch, riscoperti da nuovi e originali punti di vista, lo smascheramento dell'ipocrisia e dei falsi valori della borghesia inglese celati dietro l'ingannevole ascesa sociale di Pip, la messa in discussione parodica dell'auctoritas che il testo canonico rappresenta dalla prospettiva delle ex colonie. Sono queste alcune delle aperture create dagli autori che si sono cimentati nella riscrittura di Great Expectations come Peter Carey, Alanna Knight, Lloyd Jones, Michael Noonan, Sue Roe e H. G. Wells, cui è stato necessario accostare, per una visione d'insieme in diacronia, i percorsi dell'opera dalle prime trasposizioni teatrali ai nuovi media, passando per versioni illustrate, graphic novel, adattamenti radiofonici, cinematografici e televisivi.
