Specially bound copy belonging to screenwriter Jerry Wald with his name in gilt on the front board.<br /> <br /> Jerry Wald is best remembered for his long and successful association with Warner Brothers as both a screenwriter and producer of a number of notable films including "Mildred Pierce" 1945 "Humoresque" 1946 "Key Largo" 1948 and "Flamingo Road" 1949. In the 1950s he moved to Twentieth Century-Fox and was the producer there for "An Affair to Remember" 1957 "Peyton Place" 1957 and "Sons and Lovers" 1960.<br /> <br /> Based on Rodgers and Hart's 1936 Broadway musical. A former vaudeville star is forced to join a ballet company whereupon he becomes romantically involved with the company's prima ballerina whose jealous dance partner attempts to arrange the man's death. <br /> <br /> Set in New York. <br /> <br /> Bound in red cloth with red quarter leather binding with five raised bands and gilt titles on the spine. Distribution page present dated 5/5/39 and noted as FINAL stamped copy No. 102 with receipt intact. Title page present with credits for screenwriters Jerry Wald and Richard Macaulay and playwrights Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart. 138 leaves with last page of text numbered 135. Also released under the title "You Can't Do Without Love." Provenance available upon request. <br /> <br /> Not to be confused with the 1922 silent film directed by D.W. Griffith.<br /> <br /> George Provis was a British Art Director and Production Designer who began his career working on quota quickies low budget features made to comply with Britain's Cinematograph Films Act of 1927 in the 1930s. After the Second World War Provis was appointed by British film producer Sydney Box to head the art department at Gainsborough Pictures and is credited on over 120 films.<br /> <br /> Vera Lynn stars as an aspiring singer desperate to influence a producer played by Donald Stewart who's a victim of an attempted kidnapping plot by a group of gangsters who assume Lynn is his girlfriend. <br /> <br /> Shot on location in Surrey and London. <br /> <br /> Tall blue untitled wrappers. Title page present noted as FINAL SCRIPT with credits for screenwriters Peter Fraser and Howard Irving Young. 142 leaves with last page of text numbered 140. Mimeograph duplication rectos only. Collection of 3 vintage studio still photographs from the 1957 film one featuring Gene Kelly and Mitzi Gaynor during the title track "Les Girls" sequence and two of the trio of Mitzi Gaynor Joy Henderson and Kay Kendall in Jack Cole's brilliantly choreographed "Ladies in Waiting" sequence.<br/><br/>Based on a 1959 story by Vera Caspary. "Les Girls" was the winner of an Academy Award fro Best Costume Design and nominated for two more. The film was also the final film score for Cole Porter and the final musical for Gene Kelly under his contract with MGM ending an era defining association that produced several classic musicals. <br/><br/>10 x 8 inches.
