Provenance: The set belonged to Edwin Wolf II (1911 1991) - famous as the Librarian of the Library Company of Philadelphia, and as a collector, and an employee of the renowned Rosenbach Co. from 1930 to 1952. The Family Album purchased a large part of his collection of early books in 1992. About this work : The world famous tales and fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), neatly printed in verse, are joined by a 'Dissertation sur la Joconde' by Nicolas Boileau Despreaux (1636-1711); and the best work of the great illustrators & engravers Charles Eisen (1720-1778) and Pierre-Philippe Choffard (1730-1809). Justly considered one of the greatest examples of French rococo illustration. The Fermiers Generaux, an entrepreneurial financial association responsible for gathering and banking certain kinds of taxes, commissioned this edition of La Fontaine's zesty tales. Determined that the book should be the best of its kind, they allowed their agent, the Chevalier d'Agincourt, unlimited resources. It is still provocative to consider that patronage of the arts by this new plutocracy produced the greatest monument and triumph of this renowned age of illustration. Edition bien complète de la seconde partie, ensemble traduit de l'espagnol par l'abbé Jean Antoine de Charnes, revue pour le style par George de Backer. Elle est illustrée d'un portrait frontispice, de deux titres gravés et de 5 figures non signées imprimées sur papier fort. Les pages de titre sont encadrées d'un important motif architectural et illustrées d'une grande vignette sur bois. Les vignettes et figures ont un caractère bizarre, voire fantastique. La préface annonce une nouvelle traduction établie "avec soin" sur le "véritable original espagnol", préservant également les intitulés. Pour plusieurs siècles, cette édition demeurera la version française de référence du premier et de l’un des meilleurs romans du genre picaresque, fondateur du genre. Cette édition est rare. WorldCat ne recense que 5 exemplaires dans le monde. Elle manque à la BnF et à l'ensemble des bibliothèques françaises en ligne (CCFr). (France littéraire, IV, p. 168. Barbier (I, 113) l'attribue à Sylvain Maréchal; l'auteur est plus certainement Joseph Vasselier (1735-1798), employé des postes à Lyon, ami de Voltaire et poète à ses heures; attribution confirmée par Grand-Carteret et Dommanget ('S. Maréchal', p. 121 et 482). Contient des contes "satiriques, libres et spirituels" (Gay). Les noms des saints du calendrier sont remplacés par les noms de célébrités hétéroclites. (Gay, I, 61. Bain (1863-1940) was a professor of History in the Deccan College of Pune, in British India, until his retirement in 1919. He published fantasy stories, which he announced as translations of Sanskrit manuscripts given to him by a brahmin. Although they appear too 'British' compared to 'real' Hindu-fancies. It these tales actually make interesting reading. W34

Several small stains interior, on several pages. Interesting ex-library trace of a Russian bookseller in Contantinople (G. L. Pakhalova) on colophon with an ownership inscription in 1924. Otherwise a very good copy. Helmuth Maximilian Böttcher was the son of the writer Maximilian Böttcher. After attending the Königsstädtischer Realgymnasium in Berlin, Helmuth Maxmilian Böttcher studied law, economics and natural sciences at the universities in Berlin and Greifswald. He worked in the Prussian War Ministry during the WW1. Böttcher married a daughter of the industrialist Paul Reuss, founder of the Kyffhäuserhütte Artern and the Hörselwerke in Eisenach, with whom he had two daughters and a son. From 1924 to 1938 Böttcher was managing director of Hörselwerke, a company in Eisenach that specializes in the production of folding rules. After the Second World War Böttcher lived in the GDR, where his literary works were published at that time, but also had a residence in the Federal Republic. Towards the end of the 1950s he went to West Germany, where he lived in Sprendlingen in Hesse. Helmuth Maximilian Böttcher was the author of novels, short stories, plays and radio plays. Since the 1960s he has mainly published non-fiction books on cultural history and medical topics. (Wikipedia). Russian Edition was published in the same year, 1923 in Berlin. Only one institutional copy located in New York Public Library System NYPL according to OCLC: 70056062.
