Both volumes with the identical engraved frontispiece depicting the traditional theme of Aesop ruling the animals. The moralizing tales are extensively illustrated with copper- plate engravings by Georg Paul Busch. Volume I contains the life of Aesop by Planudes and the beginning of Aesops Fables and Volume II continues with Aesops Fables and includes the Fables of Philelphe Gabrias and Avienus. Modern binding; frontispiece of vol. II somewhat chipped otherwise clean and good. Rare and richly illustrated edition of Aesops fables with extensive dialogue on the moral of each fable. Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde a clergyman put his mark on the Aesopic work by contributing a four-line rhyming verse at the end of each fable in italics. Bellegarde also added 18 fables of the Latin poet Philelphus and 37 fables based on Aesop by Gabrias and Avienus. The larger fables added are the Battle of the Cats and the Rats and the Battle of the Rats and the Frogs. Thereafter follow five Tales of Aesop taken from Platos dialogue Protagoras another six Poetical fables with Olympian Gods as protagonists two more Tales one taken from Herodot and a last fable taken from Gerbellius. The beautiful fable illustrations are by Georg Paul Busch; a Berlin copper-engraver who died in 1756. 1840173764Canton: Canton Press Office 1840. The first full Chinese translation of Aesop's Fables First edition association copy inscribed by William Jardine one of the three "generous patrons" named in the dedication on the front wrapper "R. Goff Esqr. 105 Piccadilly from the compiler with Mr. Jardine's compliments". Jardine 1784-1843 co-founded the successful trading firm Jardine Matheson & Co. and held significant sway over the course of Anglo-Chinese relations either side of the First Opium War. This Chinese translation was intended as a primer to help the growing number of British students of Chinese working for Jardine Matheson the East India Company and other concerns in Canton. Robert Thom 1807-46 who adopted the pen-name "Sloth" honed his language skills while working for Jardine's and acted as a translator for British forces during the First Opium War 1839-42 and at the 1843 Supplementary Treaty negotiations. He was later British consul at Ningbo. Each page offers three columns of English Chinese characters and romanized Chinese. For each fable Thom dictated the Chinese to his teacher who brushed them in a legible hand. According to the introduction the volume was the first time Chinese wooden blocks and European metal type were used side-by-side during printing. Thom's translation was later reprinted in various modified editions by the Anglo-Chinese College the Shanghai Free Hospital and the Wenyutang Chinese Printing and Publishing Company. This edition is well represented institutionally but is uncommon in commerce - we have traced only five appearances at auction in the past six decades. Of these only one retained both of the original wrappers as here. Provenance: Robert Goff 1801-1866 was an antiquarian who travelled widely in the Middle East and Asia presenting a collection of Egyptian antiquities to the British Museum in 1847. This copy was later in the Bibliotheca Lindesiana one of the most impressive private collections of the 19th century its bookplate is on the front pastedown. Alexander Lindsay 1812-80 later 25th Earl of Crawford and 8th Earl of Balcarres met Goff while the latter was travelling and at the sale of Goff's art collection in 1866 Quaritch acquired a collection of Chinese drawings and sold these to Lindsay. This copy entered the Lindsay library either via Quaritch or via the dispersal of the Goff library in the 1890s. It is recorded in the 1910 Bibliotheca Lindesiana catalogue. Quarto 295 x 202 mm. With engraving of Chinese character styles furnished by Elijah Coleman Bridgman the compiler of the Canton Chrestomathy. Late 19th-century brown hard-grain half morocco by Henry Wood raised bands ruled in gilt spine lettered in gilt Papier Tourniquet-pattern sides marbled endpapers with design of Spanish moiré on Turkish with overprinted gold vein pattern top edge gilt original yellow printed wrappers bound in. Binding a little worn corners and extremities recoloured light foxing neat tissue repairs at foot of wrappers and title page loss at lower corner of p. 103 a few tide marks to fore edges: a very good copy. Die Kupferstiche stammen vermutlich von dem Augsburger Kupferstecher Christoph Schmidt der nach Aegidius Sadelers 1570-1629 Fabel-Illustrationen gearbeitet hat. Für die vorliegende Ausgabe wurden wohl teils die Kupferstich-Platten der Ausgabe Ulm 1679 verwendet bzw. überarbeitet jedoch wurde die Signatur "Aegid. Sadeler inventor; Christ. Schmidt sculp. Apart from being a prolific Dutch and Neo-Latin poet he was an esteemed linguist and philologist who edited a number of classical authors. His present splendid Phaedrus edition intended for and dedicated to the young Stadholder of Friesland and Groningen the crown-prince Johan Willem Friso of the Nassau family is magnificently printed in the style of the French in usum Delphini editions made for Le Grande Dauphin. With the bookplate of John Blackburne on the front paste-down. Rare edition of the Italian translation by the philosopher Giulio Landi 1498-1579 of Aesop's fables and the Life of Aesop including no less than 400 animal fables some collected from other sources. The fables are illustrated with numerous small anonymous woodcuts that appeared for the first time in 1569 in the fables collected by Cesare Pavesi and became very popular through Landis translations of Aesop beginning in 1580. They have been attributed to Johann Krieger a German working in Italy where he was known as Giovanni Chrieger. Several woodcuts are repeated especially at the end for the fables taken from other sources. All fables close with a moral here called "Sentenza" intended for the instruction and amusement of the youth.With 2 holes in the last few pages some water stains throughout and some restorations with now discoloured tape. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in France he moved to Mannheim. Earlier editions containing fewer fables appeared in Glasgow published by the famous printers Robert and Agnew Foulis in 8vo 1754 first edition and in Paris by Guerin & Delatour 1756 second edition. J. Barbou in Paris also published editions with fewer fables around 1750.With the armorial bookplate of Duke R.H. St. Maur on front paste-down.
