Very few actual offprints including this one were reprinted separately which do not bear traces of staples. The first conception of Eluard’s doll poems which accompanied Bellmer’s iconic photographs. At the end we find this printed announcement: “Pour illustrer quatorze photographies de Hans Bellmer. À paraître aux Éditions des Cahiers d’Art.†This edition never appeared. Eluard published a second edition of his poems in 1942 in Le Livre Ouvert and then in 1949 with Bellmer’s photographs under the title Les Jeux de la poupée.<br /> <br /> “Paul Éluard among the surrealists was particularly enthusiastic about the doll. Éluard a toujours eu le génie des titres et celui du recueil L'Amour la Poésie ne déroge pas à la règle. Il fait suite à Capitale de la douleur et contient notamment le célèbre vers « La Terre est bleue comme une orange » premier vers du septième poème du premier chapitre intitulé « Premièrement ». Il est dédié « à Gala ce livre sans fin ». Précieux exemplaire offert à Pierre Drieu la Rochelle compagnon de route de la première heure. Et ce malgré la rupture d'avec le groupe surréaliste en août 1925 avec en point d'orgue la parution d'une lettre ouverte « La véritable erreur des surréalistes » publiée dans La Nouvelle Revue française : « Vous êtes tout bonnement en train de prendre position. L'hiver dernier vous aviez déjà pris position littéraire : le surréalisme une position solide détaillée abondamment pourvue de doctrines d'exemples de précédents d'autorité de disciples de camelots . Maintenant vous doublez votre art poétique d'une ligne d'appui politique selon un procédé périodiquement utilisé par les littérateurs en France. Vous vous installez en face des néo-classiques dans le même secteur étroit encombré de vieux cadavres et de galimatias de l'autre siècle . » Aragon autrefois son inséparable lui répondra en septembre : « Regarde encore une fois mon ami avec quelles gens tu te ligues dans le sens de quelles gens tu abondes . Eh bien va mon garçon puisque tu leur as fait risette voilà leur appeau . Tu n'es qu'un homme comme les autres et pitoyable et peu fait pour montrer leur chemin aux hommes un homme perdu et que je perds. Tu t'en vas tu t'effaces. Il n'y a plus personne au lointain et tu l'as bien voulu ombre va-t'en adieu. » La rupture sera moins forte avec Éluard mais effective après la guerre d'Espagne et plus encore à partir de 1939. Paul Éluard répondra fermement en septembre 1942 à une ultime tentative d'approche de Drieu : « Dans le temps j'ai eu pour vous Drieu de l'estime et une réelle affection. Il y a deux ans j'ai même cru que grâce aux circonstances j'allais vous retrouver. Vous vous étonnez paraît-il de mon attitude envers vous. Mettons-la pour rester très général sur le compte d'un certain avis qui rend responsable de n'importe quel ‘crime' sic des hommes des femmes et des ENFANTS qui en sont innocents.
