Századtól 1686-ig. 1960. Sandor Scheiber (19131985) , rabbi and scholar, rector of the Rabbinical Seminary of Budapest. As an editor and publisher, Scheiber took particular interest in Jewish sacred folklore, the history of Hungarian Jewry, and the connections between Hungarian folklore and world literature. He wrote significant works on János Arany and Kálmán Mikszáth, and kept a diary, written in the form of letters to his brother. After 1933, he published as many as 1, 600 works; one of the most important is his Geniza Studies (1981) , summarizing the results of 40 years of research. Moses Avigdor Shulvass (19091988) , scholar and educator. Born in Plonsk, Poland, Shulvass studied in Berlin. He lived in Erez Israel from 1938 to 1948 and then immigrated to the United States, where he eventually became professor of Jewish history at Spertus College of Jewish Studies in Chicago. His publications in many languages include historical studies on Italian Jewry. Of special interest are his books Roma ve-Yerushalayim (Rome and Jerusalem, 1945) ; Hayyei ha-Yehudim be-Italyah bi-Tekufat ha-Renaissance (Jewish Life in Renaissance Italy, 1955) ; and his biographical sketch of Samuel David Luzzatto with documentary supporting material, Pirkei Hayyim (1951) . Miriam Karpilove (1888-1956) was one of the most prolific and widely published women writers of Yiddish prose. Her short stories and novels explore issues important in the lives of Jewish women of her generation. Frequent themes are the upbringing of girls and women in Eastern Europe, the barriers they encounter when they seek secular education, and the conflicts they experience upon immigration to North America. He served in the Turkish army during WWI and was stationed in Palestine. He moved to America in 1921 where his literary career blossomed. In this volume, Levadi designed the title page and included a glossary of Hebrew, Arabic, and Turkish words that the author used in the trilogy. (Yiddish Leksikon, 2017) . Written by Israel Rabinovitch (1894-1964) , an accomplished musician and writer, was chief editor of the Montreal Yiddish daily newspaper, the Keneder Adler, from 1924 to 1964. Following in the tradition of fellow musicologist Professor Abraham Tzvi Idelsohn, whom he greatly admired, Rabinovitch used the Keneder Adler as a platform to share his love for Jewish music, writing widely about it and contributing to the status and knowledge of hazzanut (cantorial arts) in Canada. In 1940, Rabinovitch published the book Muzik bai Yidn (Music by Jews) , which was translated from Yiddish into English by A. M. Klein in 1952 under the title Jewish Music: Ancient and Modern. Rabinovitch was one of the founders of the Jewish Public Library, a leader in the Labour Zionist group Poale Zion, and also the first president of the Jewish Music Council of Montreal. He passed away in Montreal in 1964. As Cantor Nathan Mendelson of the Shaar Hashomayim wrote in his obituary of Rabinovitch, his song, the song of our people remains eternal. Sorrow Without a Home, post-holocaust poetry, with some pre-war poems, by Israel Aszendorf; published in Paris by the Yiddish Writers Club, illustrated by the famous Jewish artist, Benn. With frontispiece portrait of the author. Israel Ashendorf (19091956) , Yiddish poet, short story writer, and dramatist. Ashendorf grew up and lived in Lemberg (Lwow) , Galicia (now Lviv, Ukraine) , until World War II, when he fled to Uzbekistan. He spent five years in Paris and immigrated to Argentina in 1953. In Buenos Aires he served as supervisor of Jewish secular schools, taught Hebrew and Yiddish literature, and contributed to the Yidishe Tsaytung. His first poems were published in 1927, and thereafter he contributed to Yiddish periodicals in Europe, the Americas, and Israel. In 1929, he was co-editor of the literary journal Tsushtayer. Collections of his poetry were published in 1937, 1939, 1941, 1950, and 1956. His biblical dramas Der Meylekh Shoel (King Saul, 1948) and Der Meylekh Dovid (King David, 1956) express a pessimistic worldview. Monograph of Lublins Jewish history by Majer Balaban (18771942) , historian and educator. Majer Balaban was a founder and architect of modern Polish Jewish historiography and the first to synthesize both Polish archival sources and Jewish communal records and rabbinic responsa. Balaban completed his dissertation in 1904, on Jews in Lwów at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Zydzi lwowscy na przelomie XVIgo I XVIIgo wieku; 1906) . Thereafter he taught in secondary schools until the outbreak of World War I, when he served as a military chaplain in the Austrian army. While stationed in Lublin, he took advantage of the opportunity to prepare a short monograph on the history of Jews in that community. (YIVO Encyclopedia) .
