16671003941667. No place 1667. Titlepage iii293pp. Contemporary mottled calf bottom of spine damaged. A nice wide-margined copy of this work. The War of Devolution 16671668 saw Louis XIV's French armies overrun the Hapsburg controlled Spanish Netherlands. Louis's claims to the Spanish Netherlands were tenuous. His wife Maria Theresa the daughter of Philip IV had renounced her rights of a Spanish inheritance in return for a large dowry at the time of her marriage. The dowry had yet to be paid however. When Philip died in 1665 Louis' lawyers justified Louis's possible claims by arguing that while Spanish laws of succession meant the throne of Philip IV would pass to his son Charles II ancient laws of Duchy of Brabant ruled that the Spanish Netherlands could "devolve" to Philip's daughter from his first marriage Louis's wife. France pressed the claim in 1667 and the present work was a kind of war announcement. The Latin edition was published the same year as the French one. unknown

Originally published in Mexico in 1944 "Yo cómo pobre"; trans. The author 1913-1989 began her career as a journalist in the 1920s in her home town of Torreón and after establishing herself as a columnist and a correspondent for various newspapers in Mexico and the U.S. including La Opinión de los Angeles she moved to Mexico City in 1935 joining La Prensa first as a police reporter the first woman to occupy such a position. She remained with the publication for thirty years and in 1950 was named editor of La Prensa Grafica not to be confused with the El Salvadoran publication of the same name another first for a woman in Mexico. See Image of boith letter pp.23 and full translation. Note: "Throughout his diplomatic and political activity he produced works which rank among the highest that his country's literature contains. For purity of diction and beauty of style Valera has never been surpassed in Spain. Pepita Jiménez which appeared as a serial in 1874 is probably his best known work; it has since been translated into many languages. It depicts the gradual realization by a young seminarian of the empty vanity of his vocation culminating in a shattering denouement. Other novels are Las ilusions del doctor Faustino 1875 El comendador Mendoza 1877 Pasarse de listo and Doña Luz 1879. All of the foregoing novels were written around the time when he abandoned his political activities. He was also a supporter of Iberian Federalism."
