The envelope (141 x 73mm) is addressed to "Mr. T. Jenkin. 32, Strada Reale. Malta", contained within is a piece of brown cloth (46 x 21mm) with edges frayed, on the reverse of the envelope in a contemporary hand "A Piece of "Pizzaio's" "Shroud" taken from the Cathedral at "Lima" in 1870. Not by [Miracle?]. Pizzaro was the Conqueror of Peru about 1520." Gonzalo Pizarro (1513-1548) was a Spanish conquistador who was one of his brother Francisco's main lieutenants during the conquest of the Inca Empire. Gonzalo was cruel and ruthless, but undeniably a very effective soldier. After the conquest, he fought alongside his brothers and their supporters during the civil wars that broke out among the conquistadors. Later, he led the resistance in Peru to the "New Laws" of 1542, taking up arms against an official Spanish Viceroy: this earned him a royal execution in 1548. "Gonzalo's remains were not exposed to the indignities inflicted on Carbajal's, whose quarters were hung in chains on the four great roads leading to Cuzco. Centeno saved Pizarro's body from being stripped, by redeeming his costly raiment from the executioner, and in this sumptuous shroud it was laid in the chapel of the convent of Our Lady of Mercy in Cuzco." (Precott, The Conquest of Peru, p.497).

See Image of boith letter pp.23 and full translation. Note: "Throughout his diplomatic and political activity he produced works which rank among the highest that his country's literature contains. For purity of diction and beauty of style Valera has never been surpassed in Spain. Pepita Jiménez which appeared as a serial in 1874 is probably his best known work; it has since been translated into many languages. It depicts the gradual realization by a young seminarian of the empty vanity of his vocation culminating in a shattering denouement. Other novels are Las ilusions del doctor Faustino 1875 El comendador Mendoza 1877 Pasarse de listo and Doña Luz 1879. All of the foregoing novels were written around the time when he abandoned his political activities. He was also a supporter of Iberian Federalism." Originally published in Mexico in 1944 "Yo cómo pobre"; trans. "I Eat Poor" this novel "concerns the lives and loves of a group of outcasts who live in the slums of La Morena where hunger and poverty are always paramount." The author 1913-1989 began her career as a journalist in the 1920s in her home town of Torreón and after establishing herself as a columnist and a correspondent for various newspapers in Mexico and the U.S. including La Opinión de los Angeles she moved to Mexico City in 1935 joining La Prensa first as a police reporter the first woman to occupy such a position. She remained with the publication for thirty years and in 1950 was named editor of La Prensa Grafica not to be confused with the El Salvadoran publication of the same name another first for a woman in Mexico. She wrote a number of other novels and non-fiction works as well as some poetry but this book doesn't seem to have made much of a splash in its American edition and it became the only one of her books to ever be published in this country. .
