Four folio volumes in two sturdy decorated board slipcases, fine. Over 2500 pages. A reprint of the first monument of Spanish bibliography, a bibliographical dictionary of Spanish authors with highly detailed descriptions of the various editions of their works. The first edition was published in the late 17th century. The second edition, which is reproduced faithfully here, has long been regarded as the best because of its textual correctness and Ibarra's peerless typography.
First and only edition of this important monograph. 2 leaves; xx, 356 pp. Covers the intrigues which began in 1525, when Charles V captured Francois I after winning the battle of Pavia. Beautifully printed by Crapelet on good laid paper. 8vo. Attractively bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt, covers elaborately decorated in gilt and blind. All edges marbled. Light wear to binding and minor sunning to spine, some internal spotting. Still a very good copy of a very scarce book.
Three volumes. Engraved frontis and other engraved plates, two of them folding. Inconsequential marginal worming in one volume. 16mo. Worn leather backed boards binding. Spines should be replaced. XLib. [French Art Alliance, New York]. An important satire which parodies the assembly of the Etats Generaux held in 1593 (with the object of electing a Catholic King). It expresses the views in favor of the claims of Henri IV while opposing the Ligue [Spanish League and its supporters]. The satires greatly influenced the outcome of the assembly, and Henry IV was elected. The work is divided into three parts. It begins with a burlesque description of the opening procession of the assembly and this is followed in the second part by a catalogue of the chief Ligueurs and imaginary speeches by real persons. Finally, there are miscellaneous satires and epigrams. Written at the moment of the defeat of the Ligue, it was an immediate 'best-seller'. Authorship is usually ascribed to Jean Leroy, a canon of Rouen, with the collaboration of Jean Passerat, Pierre Pithou, Nicolas Rapim and others. This is the standard eighteenth century edition. The title of the lampoon derives from Saturae Menippeae, lost work of Varro based on satires by the Greek cynic Menippus. Brunet V-145; Cohen-De Rici 939. FR2

4to., on laid paper, some mild age- and damp-marking to several leaves; strongly bound in twentieth century boards, paper label, a bright, crisp copy. Although attributed here to Beaumont and Fletcher, later scholarship increasingly favours authorship by Fletcher and Massinger. The play, one of the finest Restoration comedies, was first performed in 1622 with the first licensed edition following in 1647. Hardcover, 8vo, 482 pages. S. 479-482: Americo Castro. Selected bibliography. The Richard Kronstein foundation for the promotion of Jewish and cognate studies. Castro (18851972) , was a Spanish historian and literary critic. Castro was a professor at the University of Madrid and later at Princeton University. He interpreted the culture and history of Spain as a result of the coming together of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, which created a peculiarly Hispanic form of life, different both from the East and from the civilization of Western Europe. The expulsion of 1492 was in Castro's view the result of uncontainable pressures from below. He believes that the preoccupation with purity of lineage in Christian Spain from the 15th century on was a transfer of a Jewish concept, due to the infiltration of converts into Christian society. The use of secrecy and informers by the Inquisition was a continuation of methods used by Jewish tribunals. Ultimately, according to Castro, it was the Jews and their descendants the Conversos who were responsible for the discrimination by the Spaniards against the New Christians because of the latter's blood or race and for the cruel and unjust methods employed by the Inquisition and the maltreatment of those who were brought to trial before it. These were all derived from Jewish sources and traditions. Castro relied on "evidence" from the Bible, from the origin of the Spanish aristocracy, from medieval Jewish authors like Santob de Carrion (Shem Tov ben Ardutiel) , R. Moses Arragel, R. Asher ben Yehiel, R. Solomon ben Adret, and others. Castro's evidence is based entirely on a basic misunderstanding of the sources, of the Jews' understanding of the biblical text, and of the essence of Jewish law (Scholberg in EJ 2007) . OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (National Library of Sweden) . Heavily warped by waterdamage, but completely usable with no explicit damage (plates were not printed on glossy paper, but rather high-grade flat paper, so they did not stick) . Ex-library with usual markings. Staining to cover. Staining on edges of pages. Good condition. Important and scarce. (Sef-18-17)
16671003941667. No place 1667. Titlepage iii293pp. Contemporary mottled calf bottom of spine damaged. A nice wide-margined copy of this work. The War of Devolution 16671668 saw Louis XIV's French armies overrun the Hapsburg controlled Spanish Netherlands. Louis's claims to the Spanish Netherlands were tenuous. His wife Maria Theresa the daughter of Philip IV had renounced her rights of a Spanish inheritance in return for a large dowry at the time of her marriage. The dowry had yet to be paid however. When Philip died in 1665 Louis' lawyers justified Louis's possible claims by arguing that while Spanish laws of succession meant the throne of Philip IV would pass to his son Charles II ancient laws of Duchy of Brabant ruled that the Spanish Netherlands could "devolve" to Philip's daughter from his first marriage Louis's wife. France pressed the claim in 1667 and the present work was a kind of war announcement. The Latin edition was published the same year as the French one. unknown
