Si forma inizialmente a Bologna all’Accademia di Belle Arti e una volta ottenuto il diploma, nel 1892 si trasferisce a Roma. Qui conosce il poeta Nino Costa fondatore del cenacolo In arte libertas che proponeva un rinnovamento dell’arte attraverso la riscoperta dei grandi del Quattrocento sull’esempio dei Preraffaelliti. De Carolis inizia così a frequentare questo gruppo e ne diventa membro iniziando a realizzare dipinti di impronta preraffaellita. Nel 1900 conosce il poeta Giovanni Pascoli per il quale disegna ed esegue un pomo in argento e la targhetta per il bastone dono degli amici della rivista fiorentina Marzocco, inizia quindi ad occuparsi della decorazione grafica di alcune pubblicazioni del poeta. Tale collaborazione si rivela importante nella produzione artistica tra il 1892 e il 1928, perché le opere di questo periodo trattano paesaggi agresti e marini che risentono dell’intonazione pascoliana. Nel 1901 De Carolis lascia Roma per Firenze, dove insegna ornato all’Accademia di Belle Arti dedicandosi alla xilografia. Questa tecnica sarà a lui molto cara e primo in Italia riprenderà l’antica tecnica della xilografia policroma a più legni. Excellent impression on smooth ivory paper, wide margins. Size: mm 170 x 245. Adolfo de Carolis (1874 - 1926), was born in Montefiore dell’Aso on the 6th of January 1874. He moved to Rome and was accepted as a member of the exclusive society ‘In Arte Libertas’ (Freedom in Art’) which had been founded by his close friend Giovanni (‘Nino’) Costa. This society opposed official styles promoted by the academies and influential art critics of the day and espoused the politics, philosophy and aesthetics of the British Pre-Raphaelite movement. The main figures in the British movement were William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and Walter Crane. These groups were also almost certainly involved with the Freemasons, and much of the symbolism in their work have been identified as Masonic. De Carolis exhibited work at the In Arte Libertas annual exhibition right up to 1901. De Carolis was an artistic polymath, working as a painter (in particular of murals), interior designer, decorator, xylographer (wood engraver), illustrator and photographer, and is probably the best known exponent of Art Nouveau in Italy. He was commissioned to produce murals for the Villa Brancadoro in San Benedetto del Tronto, and the ballroom of the Palazzo della Provincia (both in Ascoli Piceno). He also decorated the great hall of the Palazzo del Podestà in Bologna with murals. He designed the Baptismal Font at the Cathedral of Ajaccio, and contributed decoration and murals in many other illustrious edifices around Italy, as well as supervising restoration work in the Borgia apartments in the Vatican. He is also known for his stained glass and mosaics at the Villa Puccini in Torre del Lago. His talent and originality was quickly recognised by two of the greatest Italian writers and poets of the day, Gabriele D'Annunzio and Giovanni Pascoli, and he became their preferred illustrator. Among his most popular works were many illustrations for Gabriele d'Annunzio's novels (Il Notturno, La figlia di Jorio) and Giovanni Pascoli‘s books of poems. In 1908 his work was described by a panel of judges in Bologna as ‘magnificent, full of evocative fervour, rich in imagination, and secure in the unity of the whole work’. In the backgrounds of many of his paintings it is possible to recognise the typical landscape of le Marche, which he loved so much. As well as his major works, in his later years he also designed bank notes, theatrical sets, posters, calendars, postcards, advertisements and even product labels. He also wrote essays on art and, from 1922, worked as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. After world war 1 he was employed by the Ministry of War to design medals and certificates for war heroes. He died in Rome on the 7th of February 1928, but, in 1950, his mortal remains were returned to Montefiore by the then mayor, Francesco Egidi, and re-interred in a marble tomb in the church of San Francesco. And ten years later Egidi donated a series De Carolis’ oil sketches for the ‘Salone del Podestà’ in Bologna (the most prestigious public building in the city) which he worked on for over twenty years, between 1908 and 1928. The De Carolis family also donated the complete collection of engravings on wood (xylography) in 1976.

This is an about very good hardcover copy in a good dust jacket. The jacket front and back panels are present, but spine of jacket mostly perished. The top edges of both panels chipped, the front more heavily. Very clean inside, however the paper is very acidic and the edges of the text pages have browned. Text in Italian. The book is illustrated with 21 original serigraphs by Mino Maccari. These are printed on a lighter, better quality paper. The colors are fesh and bright. Palazzeschi's fabulous creatures are playfully interpreted by Maccari, who also used two of the decorations for the front and back panel of the dust jacket. Two different illustrations have been applied directly to the paper-covered boards. There is one brief inscription in Italian from the period on the front endpaper. These are two very good hardcover volumes bound in full red morocco, one with five raised bands on the spine, the other with four raised bands, decorated in gilt. We offer both volumes together as they are both first editions, and both were bound in fine red leather bindings by the reknowned Holzer Bindery, Boston. The bindings have gilt circular devices on their front covers, and bookplates on their inside front covers identifying them as having been awarded as prizes by the Latin School, Boston, in the years 1913 and 1915. Both volumes were given to the same individual. Both bookplates signed in ink by the Rector of the school. Additionally all page edges are gilt. The spines and edges of the red leather bindings are darkened. Completely clean inside. The Hill Towns of Italy was published in October 1903. The Plain Towns of Italy was published in October 1911. Both are first editions. Both volumes are completely clean inside and are illustrated in black & white with Alinari photographs of Italian buildings and streets. Both volumes contain double-page color maps: the Hill Towns is of Central Italy; and the Plain Towns is of Upper Italy. Both volumes are stamped Holzer Binder, Boston, in gilt on the rear board inside lower edge. Both volumes with different red and gray marbled endpapers. 8" high X 6" wide, 398 & 603 pages. Rarissima opera seconda dell'Onofri, in edizione auto - edita a spese dell'Autore. Arturo Onofri (Roma, 15 settembre 1885 – Roma, 25 dicembre 1928) è stato un poeta e scrittore italiano, tra i massimi esponenti della poesia metafisica in Italia. Nacque da una agiata famiglia borghese, il padre romano e la madre polacca (il padre nel 1897 entrò nei ruoli direttivi della Cassa di Risparmio). Il giovane si iscrisse al liceo classico di Tivoli nel 1901 e ricevette una educazione privilegiata e culturalmente varia, aperta al nuovo: ad esempio, il suo gusto musicale fu subito indirizzato verso il sinfonismo europeo e le liturgie di Wagner, a scapito del più tradizionale melodramma italiano, culminante in Puccini. Le cartoline e le lettere di questo periodo, indirizzate ai genitori e rimaste inedite, testimoniano la nostalgia di casa e comprendono richieste di libri scolastici, abiti e altro materiale necessario alla sua permanenza fuori casa. Onofri iniziò a dedicarsi all'attività letteraria molto presto, fin da giovanissimo. Mai stretto da particolari necessità di ordine economico, poté consacrarvisi liberamente e affacciarsi al nuovo secolo con spirito elegante e ironico. Fu così che si avvicinò al cenacolo crepuscolare, prendendo a frequentare i più noti ritrovi letterari romani dell’epoca, fra cui l’Aragno e il Caffè Greco. Nel 1916 sposò Bice Sinibaldi, da cui ebbe due figli. Fu perciò spinto a cercarsi una sistemazione, ma "refrattario a impegni gravosi e alle vere responsabilità" preferì assecondare la propria indole, impiegandosi nella Croce Rossa. Secondo i riferimenti, risulta che Onofri pubblicò le sue prime quattro raccolte di versi sulla rivista "Vita letteraria" ("Liriche", 1907; "Poemi tragici", 1908; "Canti delle Oasi", 1909; "Disamore", 1912). In tutte queste opere si riportano le relative tipografie di stampa ma non compare riferimento alcuno alla editorialità della rivista, sebbene tutte le raccolte risultino "ufficilamente" apparse nello stesso anno delle edizioni auto – edite e sempre, peraltro, a spese dell'Autore. Ragion per cui resta incerto se esse siano uscite dapprima in una sorta di "ante litteram" auto -editoriale, che avrebbe poi goduto della comparsa del nome della rivista. Nello specifico: "Liriche", marzo 1907, all’insegna della "Vita Letteraria" ma per i tipi della Tipografia della Biblioteca di Cultura Liberale di Firenze (riedite poi nella collana "Opera prima", Garzanti, 1948), la prima silloge poetica, trentuno componimenti scritti fra il 1903 e il 1906; "Poemi tragici", gennaio 1908, all’insegna della "Vita Letteraria" ma usciti a spese dell'Autore, Roma, Via Borgognana 38, Roma, Stabilimento tipografico della Società Editrice Laziale, trentotto componimenti scritti fra il 1906 e il 1907; "Canti delle Oasi", 1909, ancora edizione dell‘Autore, Roma, Via Borgognona 38, tipografia Tuscolana di Frascati; "Disamore", 1912. Queste raccolte verranno poi raggruppate con il titolo di "Liriche" (Ricciardi, Napoli, 1914, tipografia Angelo Trani, novembre 1913) ed “eccetto limitatissime novità" consisteranno in una ristretta scelta della produzione precedente, arricchita di varianti e di correzioni minime. Tutte le opere di Onofri sono da considerarsi molto rare a reperirsi. Esemplare con un usuale ingiallimento del tempo, in buono stato di conservazione.
