199210031Cambridge University Press. 1992. Softcover. Fine. The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation from 1952 onwards of the first Greek establishment in the West Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages . 0521421640 . 200144467Rizzoli. 2001. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Very light bump to 1 corner of book. DJ has edgewear and minor chipping.; The Etruscans have long been a rich source of research and intellectual inquiry as the most significant ethnic group who resided in ancient Etruria current-day Tuscany and Umbria in Italy. A well-defined polity the Etruscans were an advanced people whose presence on the Italian peninsula from the 8th to 4th century B. C. Had an enormous impact on Roman culture whose rise of power saw the collapse of Etruscan civilization. This book is extensive in its scope; it traces the rise of the Etruscans at the end of the Bronze Age; examines the economic structure of the society; explores the emergence of a powerful aristocracy in the period from 750-650 B. C. ; and considers the religious and cultural life of the group. This knowledge has largely been gleaned from a wealth of monuments and material culture which the Etruscans left behind including architecture the various forms of which indicate familial structure and socio-economic standing not to mention the larger social structure of Etruscan society and applied arts such as bronze objects for both ceremonial use and everyday life which were produced by an artisan class for a wealthy and demanding aristocracy. Etruscan contributions to the history of art are also of immense importance and are explored in depth in this volume. Etruscan wall painting was exceptional in that it is one of the few examples of pre-Roman artistic production of this genre. Sculpture was also a relatively highly developed form of art and the Etruscans are known for their important experiments with form. Noted scholar Mario Torelli editor of the book gathers here an illuminating collection of essays reflective of the most current research on the Etruscans. As a professor of classical archaeology for nearly three decades who has directed archeological digs at some of the most significant Etruscan sites Torelli offers a unique insight into the scholarly terrain of Etruscan studies. Torelli also contributes a substantive essay on Etruscan religion exploring the rather exceptional character of this important aspect of Etruscan life. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful reproductions of Etruscan art and culture this impressive catalogue explores every aspect of the Etruscan people and their artistic and cultural legacy in the most expansive consideration of their enormous contribution to Western culture to date.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 672 pages; Heavy book. . 0847823911 . Very Good.Original photograph from the collection of Peter Selz who whose article “Giacomo Manzù and his portal for St Peter's†appeared in the December 2001 issue of Sculpture Magazine.Giacomo Manzù a sculptor medalist graphic artist and illustrator was born in Bergamo on December 22 1908. His original name was Giacamo Manzoni. He was an important twentieth-century sculptor of religious statuary. In 1929 Manzù traveled to Paris. He decided to move to Milan in 1930. In his first group exhibitions of the following years he met Carlo Carrà 1881 – 1966. Around the same time Manzù received his first commissions for religious art including statuary for the Catholic University chapel in Milan. In 1934 the artist traveled to Rome to visit St. Peter’s. His visual impressions of this visit became the basis of a bronze of a cardinal in 1938. In 1937 his work was shown in the Galleria della Cometa in Rome. He was assigned his own section of the Venice Biennale of the following year. From 1941 to 1954 he taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan where his first retrospective show was mounted in the Palazzo Reale in 1947. The same year he entered a competition for the design of a door for St. Peter’s in Rome and was awarded the official commission in 1952. The planned theme was "the triumph of the saints and the martyrs of the church" but the door was never executed. From 1954 to 1966 Manzù taught sculpture at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg. He was commissioned to design the main portal of the Salzburg Cathedral in 1955 and Pope John 23rd 1958-1963 asked him to make the "Portal of Death" for St. Peter’s cathedral. Manzù showed his work at the Kassel "documenta" exhibitions 2 and 6 in 1959 and 1977. The Manzù Museum was founded in 1969 in Ardea near Rome. Giacomo Manzù died in Ardea on January 17 1991. Scattered surface soiling adhesive residue dog-eared corners and scattered edge tears along left margin outside of image area. Paper is braced on the verso with two pages from a mid 19th century book with illustrations by C.Perrin. One image depicts a scene of a group of soldiers representing the Holy Roman Empire causing a ruckus in a tavern named for King Richard the Lionhearted. Soldiers in what appears to be 18th century uniform bicker one drawing his sword in defense a lady appearing at his side the other standing at the foot of an empty throne.
