An early reprinting of the Ingram Edition which effectively rescued Edgar Allan Poe's reputation both personal and literary from the clutches of Rufus Wilmot Griswold whose malicious portrait of his literary rival appeared in the first collected edition 1850 of Poe's work. Widdleton began publishing Poe's Works to take advantage of renewed interest generated by the dedication of the Poe Monument in Baltimore on November 18 1875. This printing was designated the "Library Edition" which is stamped in gilt on the spine heel of each volume. Octavo four volumes: clxxviii 395 1 blank 6 ads pp. 530 pp. iv 2 571 1 blank pp. 578 pp. with 5 plates and several textual facsimiles. Original brown cloth bindings with blind-stamped borders and decoration on the boards and gilt and black-stamped borders titling and decoration on the spines. A few leaves are unopened. Period previous owner's ink signature to a prefatory blank leaf in the first volume. This is the issue with the frontispiece of Edgar Allen Poe facing page 49 and the first published biography of him on pages 49-53. James Russell Lowell's article on Poe includes the following poems in the February issue: "To Helen" "The Haunted Palace" "Lenore" and the controversial "Al Aaraaf". In the July issue his "The Imp of the Perverse" actually states his name as the author with a hand colored picture of flowers on the facing page. The October issue has his unsigned poem "The Divine Right of Kings". and his "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether" is identified as his. Finally the December issue has his "Stanzas to F.S.O". While all the poems listed here are by Poe some did not list him as author.Bound in 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards handsomely rebacked double black leather spine label gilt. George R. This is handsome and exciting production of Poe's classic story. The Cask of Amontillado is a chilling story that follows the narrator Montresor as he seeks revenge on his acquaintance Fortunato by luring him into the catacombs. The masterful storytelling by Poe explores themes of betrayal revenge and darkness that lie within the human psyche. The story first appeared in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book. The text in this edition follow exactly that of the original printing. Hand bound with brown wood covers sewn with wine colored linen thread. it is a unique non-adhesive stitch that incorporates a wood spine into the structure. The text and the engravings are printed on 100% archival paper. Six of the engravings are printed on unpaginated sheets of Moriki Kozo paper. The endpapers are done with hand marbled paper donated by the Porcupine's Quill. The book is housed in a wooden box reminiscent of those used to present fine wines with the wood evoking the casks where the wine is aged. All the wood for this project was hand stained and sealed. Along with two color lithographs she included an etching of a skull-like self-portrait which was originally a pen and ink drawing and 2 smaller black & white text illustrations. Raphael Soyer in his afterword tells of his reaction to seeing Neel's paintings for the first time: " 'a veritable inferno!' Original final draft shooting script with color rewrite pages for the film Sanctuary written by James Poe based on the novel by William Faulkner directed by Tony Richardson and starring Bradford Dillman. This was Dillman’s working script with his scene notations throughout. With Dillman’s estate stamp which reads “From the Library of Bradford Dillmanâ€. Bradbound 138 pages dated July 15 1960. Dillman plays the character of Gowan Stevens with Lee Remick as Temple Drake and Yves Montand as Candy Man. An earlier film adaptation of Faulkner’s 1931 novel is the 1933 film The Story of Temple Drake starring Miriam Hopkins in the title role. A lightly handled copy with some minor darkening to the covers and a bit of edge wear. Bradford Dillman 1930-2018 was one of Hollywood’s best regarded actors among his peers and the public. He was trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and knew James Dean in early television. Dillman rose to sudden fame with his appearance in Richard Fleisher’s film Compulsion 1959 with Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles and continued in movies throughout his career in such films as The Way We Were The Iceman Cometh The Enforcer Sudden Impact Crack in the Mirror Escape From the Planet of the Apes Francis of Assisi Piranha The Swarm etc. A great success in television Dillman appeared in a remarkable number of shows and made for TV movies in a variety of genres including Mission Impossible The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
