Le illustrazioni ispirate ai Racconti dello scrittore americano si collocano in un momento di vero e proprio snodo della sua produzione figurativa che, dopo le prime affermazioni espositive e l'entusiastica accoglienza della critica, transita verso una ricerca più personale e indipendente. I disegni per Poe (centocinque in totale), a partire dalle prime apparizioni, si segnalano immediatamente come gli esempi più rappresentativi e fortunati della creatività di Martini, in grado di restituirne appieno sia il virtuosismo grafico che la raffinata propensione immaginativa. Esposte a Venezia, Bruxelles, Londra, Milano e Parigi, le illustrazioni godono di un notevole successo, grazie anche all'impegno del critico Vittorio Pica. L'interesse verso questa serie, che non dà segni di cedimento lungo tutto il Novecento, non si inscrive esclusivamente entro le riletture interne del percorso artistico martiniano, ma attraversa anche le molteplici declinazioni del simbolismo e la nascita delle avanguardie europee. Il saggio si concentra su due aspetti: da una parte ricostruisce la serie cronologica dei disegni, delineandone la fortuna attraverso le vicende espositive e i commenti della critica; dall'altra mette in luce il processo di costruzione delle illustrazioni che sembrano nascere tanto dal testo letterario quanto da modelli iconografici preesistenti. Il volume contiene una sezione di illustrazioni in cui viene riprodotto il corpus di disegni a china realizzati da Martini tra il 1905 e il 1940 per le raccolte di racconti di Edgar Allan Poe, Histoires extraordinaires, Nouvelles histoires extraordinaires e Histoires grotesques et sérieuses, nella traduzione di Charles Baudelaire.
