Aaron Douglas. 7 photos including frontis 8 full-page illustrations by Aaron Douglas who also did some smalll designs that appear at the beginning of each play 430p. Old rebind in red leather with five faux hubs on backstrip and the addition of rather active marbled endpapers. 22 cm. Extremities rather rubbed including corners the faux hubs amd the edges all edges of backstrip. Former owner's name on first blank leaf. Contents somewhat browned throughout but otherwise sound and clean. This book has always seemed a bit less common than many of the other desirable titles from the Harlem Renaissance but that often seems to be the case for books with plays rather than fiction.Ten of the twenty plays are by African Americans including an early play "Sahdji" by Richard Bruce now remenbered as Richard Bruce Nugent.The other ten are by white authors such as Ridgely Torrence Eugene O'Neill and Paul Green. Ses positions, en particulier sur la question du libre arbitre, le firent accuser de spinozisme, accusation alors dangereuse, qui lui valut la défense et les éloges et de Voltaire, Voltaire qui s’était rendu Leyde pour assister à ses cours en 1737. L’ouvrage est cité, par ailleurs, pour la théorie du chiffrement et de la cryptographie : Gravesande expose sa méthode révolutionnaire de codage et de décodage basée sur sa philosophie du langage ("De l’art de déchiffrer des Lettres", p. 391-408).
