FILIASI, Giuseppe. - Nacque a Napoli nel 1872, da Luigi Giacomo, di nobile famiglia napoletana, e da Maria Milano Franco. Primo di nove fratelli, condusse vita molto ritirata: le poche fonti pervenute accennano a motivi di salute che, nonostante fosse avviato agli studi classici, lo costrinsero a lasciare ben presto l'Università, e a continuare ad approfondire da autodidatta quegli studi scientifici e filosofici che lo appassionarono per tutta la vita. Cattolico sincero, sebbene non sempre apprezzato dal cattolicesimo ufficiale, il F. tentò nella sua opera fondamentale, gli Appunti di fisica e metafisica, di armonizzare in un'ampia sintesi i risultati della scienza moderna, i principi della teologia e il pensiero filosofico. L'opera, incompiuta, fu data alle stampe, in tre momenti successivi a Napoli: il primo volume apparve nel 1913, il secondo nel 1917, infine il terzo nel 1926. Il F. stesso, nelle Avvertenze e Prefazioni che antepose ai tre volumi, denunciò le difficoltà di ordine diverso che aveva incontrato nel dare alla sua opera sviluppo sistematico e carattere unitario; solo gradualmente, infatti, si era reso conto della vastità del disegno, così da dover ripiegare sulla pubblicazione provvisoria di un primo volume, Le intuizioni, che riguardava la sola prima parte dell'opera, cui sarebbe dovuta seguire, in un momento successivo, la seconda parte, Le sensazioni. Inoltre il F., ansioso di sottoporre il lavoro al giudizio della critica, si accontentò di una versione incompleta: il primo volume fu dato alle stampe privo degli ultimi due fondamentali capitoli (VIII e IX), in cui l'autore, svolti i principî filosofici che dovevano armonizzare la sua concezione teistico-dualistica con le sue teorie fisiche (cap. VIII), avrebbe dovuto "trattare della Natura e della Divinità e però dei rapporti fra Dio e il Mondo e quindi sviluppare la parte più specialmente metafisica" (Avvertenza, 1913, p. XXI). Tuttavia l'opera passò quasi completamente sotto silenzio, se si eccettuano due recensioni, una di G. Gentile sulla Critica del 1916; l'altra, apparsa anonima, su Civiltà cattolica il 1º luglio 1916 (cfr. Prefazione al secondo volume). Per quanto riguarda la pubblicazione, sempre provvisoria ed incompiuta, degli altri due volumi, l'autore accenna a motivi di salute ed anche a difficoltà economiche.
