This edition is very scarce, and especially more interesting for its American ownership. Jakob Boehme (or Böhme) [1575-1624], German religious mystic, a cobbler of Görlitz, in England also called Behmen. He was a student of the Bible and was influenced by Paracelsus. In his major works, De signatura rerum (The Signature of all Things) and Mysterium magnum, Boehme describes God as the abyss, the nothing and the all, the primordial depths from which the creative will struggles forth to find manifestation and self-consciousness. Evil is a result of the striving of single elements of Deity to become the whole; conflict ensues as man and nature strive to achieve God who, in himself, contains all antithetical principles. Boehme exerted a profound influence on the philosophies of Baader, Schelling, Hegel, and Schopenhauer. Boehme claimed divine revelation and had many followers in Germany and Holland. Societies of Behmenites were formed in England; many of them were later absorbed by the Quakers. QUITE SCARCE AND IMPORTANT. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 011A. Swedish philosopher, scientist and religious writer, Emanuel Sewdenborg (Swedenbourg) [1688-1772] established himself as an inventor and scientist. He started having visions in 1743, and devoted himself thereafter to psychical and spiritual research. interpreting the scriptures as the immediate voice of God. He taught that all scripture contains an inner, spiritual sense which is not at all obvious from the natural sense of the word, or our understanding of the world. Among other things, he taught: that the universe is filled with inhabited planets, which are peopled by perfect human forms just like those on our earth; that their spirits in the spirit world can be seen and contacted, and he proceeds to describe some of their inhabitants ('Worlds in Space'); in 'Heaven and Hell' he describes in detail the heaven and hell of the spirit world, and how people and societies there function and are organized; in 'Divine Love and Wisdom' he describes the nature of that divine Spirit which emanates from the Deity, called in the scriptures the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost, and which appears in the spirit world as the sun, and gives light and heat to the inhabitants of that world - its light having the effect of intelligence, and its heat having the effect of love; in 'The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem Concerning the Lord' he discusses the spiritual interpretation of the doctrine of the Godhead; Etc. Although he never preached publicly or formally founded a religious sect, his followers which included many artisits and freethinkers (among them William Blake) constituted a considerable society which became known as the New Jerusalem Church. At Corpus Christi College he met the poet Edward Young, his most significant literary associate. Newcomb took the degree of BA in 1704 and became chaplain to Charles Lennox, first duke of Richmond. He was rector of Stopham in Sussex from 1705 to at least 1723. He was also rector of nearby Barlavington from 1707 until his death. He began his literary career in 1709 with An Epistle from the Duke of Burgundy to the French King, a panegyric on Marlborough, returning to the theme with Pacata Britannia (1713), on the treaty of Utrecht. His satiric voice was established with Bibliotheca: a Poem. Occasion'd by the Sight of a Modern Library (1712), along lines suggested by Jonathan Swift's Battle of the Books; it contains virulent attacks on many modern writers, especially Daniel Defoe and Richard Bentley, a panegyric on Richard Steele, and a vision of the goddess Oblivion, whose resemblance to Alexander Pope's Dulness was noted by John Nichols and Joseph Warton. In 1723 Newcomb published, by subscription, this Miltonic epic. It was dedicated to the Earl of March, who succeeded that year to the title of Duke of Richmond. Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W151
