Il sentimento della natura, la spontaneità delle emozioni, la passione amorosa, la nazionalità, l'eroismo, la libertà, la diversità divennero oggetto di rinnovata attenzione da parte degli individui più sensibili producendo, così, un nuovo modo di essere nella cultura e nell'arte. Tale tendenza che auspicava, al contempo, il recupero della tradizione e una propria identità controcorrente viene indicata con una parola carica di valenze e di significati sempre nuovi: romanticismo. Nell'età romantica - come bene emerge dalla ricostruzione globale messa a punto in questo volume - la pittura europea si manifestò come una forma d'arte plurale e perciò, di volta in volta, naturalistica, storica, simbolica, mistica. Un'arte radicata, in modo profondo, nella civiltà filosofica, letteraria e musicale del tempo, le cui espressioni costituiscono uno degli archetipi fondamentali della spiritualità dell'Occidente.
