br. Il presente volume raccoglie in maniera integrale lo scambio epistolare, costituito da cinquantatré missive, intercorso tra Emil Cioran e George Balan nel periodo 1967-1992. In pieno regime comunista, nell'agosto del 1965, Balan si imbatte per caso nella lettura dell'opera giovanile di Cioran "Cartea amagirilor" (1936). Nonostante questi sia considerato un pensatore "sospetto" dall'intellighenzia della Repubblica Socialista di Romania, finanche un "traditore", per le posizioni critiche espresse dall'esilio parigino verso la nazione che gli ha dato i natali, Balan, affascinato dalla sua prosa, decide di approfondire la conoscenza dell'autore e di riabilitare la sua figura in patria. Inizia così tra i due intellettuali un intenso scambio epistolare, che si protrae negli anni e che lascia trasparire, al di là dell'amicizia, una diversa, opposta concezione riguardante il rapporto tra inquietudine e fede. La fervida spiritualità cristiano-ortodossa di Balan si scontra spesso con il profondo scetticismo di Cioran. Malgrado ciò, Balan è costretto a riconoscere nel pensatore di Ra?inari "uno degli spiriti più religiosi del secolo" e, al tempo stesso, un autentico "maestro" nell'evoluzione del proprio percorso esistenziale.
