Ritschl went on to write numerous learned works in Latin philology and directed the doctoral thesis of Friedrich Nietzsche. Large 8vo, cloth-backed boards. Light wear to head and tail of spine. In-4 (242 x 188 mm), demi-vélin de l'éditeur, titre doré dans un décor typographique au dos et dans un cercle doré sur le plat supérieur, sous emboîtage original de parution, 154, (1) bl., (1) p. de justification, titre, reliure et ornements typographiques par Henry Van de Velde. Edition originale, tirage limité à 1250 exemplaires. Celui-ci, numéroté 179, imprimé sur papier de Hollande Van Gelder Zonen. Impression en noir et marron terre de Sienne. La page de titre, souvent reproduite, et les ornements typographiques sont l’oeuvre d'Henry Van de Velde (1863-1957) qui donne l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de l'art du livre Jugendstil. Composé en 1888 peu avant que Nietzsche ne sombre dans la démence, l’ouvrage fut édité vingt ans après, à titre posthume, par Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche. Sur les conditions de cette publication, cf.
