A stunning original poster design by William H. Bradley 1868-1962 the foremost American Art Nouveau designer of his time known for his advertising posters and book and magazine illustrations. "The Echo" a "humorous and artistic fortnightly" was advertised as "Chicago's new paper - in which will appear a series of colored frontispieces by Will H. Bradley." It began publication on May 1 1895 and ceased with vol. 4 no. 3 July 1897. "Bradley was well acquainted with the stylistic innovations of his European counterparts. Like many French artists he borrowed stylistic elements from Japanese prints working in flat broad color planes and cropped forms. He appropriated the whiplash curves of the Art Nouveau movement so dominant in Europe at the turn of the century and was influenced by the work of the English illustrator Aubrey Beardsley" willbradley.com. The end sheets appear to be much newer indicating a replacement to repair weakened or cracked hinges. An octavo of 8 5/8 by 5 3/4 inches with the cloth at the head and heel of the spine worn and just beginning to fray and the cloth over the tips of the boards is rubbed the title page preliminaries and first few pages of the book show foxing which is also true of the last few pages the index and faint foxing throughout the book. There is a one inch stain to the fore edge of the text block and a narrow stain to the upper margins of pages 185 to 194. 400 pages of text including an index. Illustrated with a fold-out map of Canada and the English Colonies in 1750 as the frontispiece and with five other maps one of which folds out. A difficult title to locate in first edition. E. P. This first edition was followed by another edition of this address delivered at the fourth annual reunion of the Association of the Maryland line. Johnson was a secessionist from a notable Frederick Maryland family. Despite Maryland remaining in the Union Johnson was a significant in promoting the Confederate cause. Binding is quite nice without appreciable wear; minor soiling to the wrappers; old dampstain to the top margin mostly visible on the rear wrapper and less so on the front wrapper and title page; otherwise only minor evidence of it on the very top of the margin. The first edition of this address was delivered in Richmond in 1884 before the Virginia Division of the Association of the Army of Northern Virginia. Neither are common. Despite Maryland remaining in the Union Johnson was a significant in promoting the Confederate cause. He was instrumental in raising the First Maryland Infantry C.S.A. at the outset of the war. Illustrated throughout. From story: Little Tommy sat on the doorsteps before his house one summerâ€™s day and the hot sun streamed down over him in a flood. Tommy was very glad however to be so warm for he was just recovering from a long illness and was so pale and thin that the sun seemed only to put life and strength into him and to do him no harm whatever. The little boy was dressed in a suit of blue clothes just like those of a sailor with anchors of white braid on the shoulders with a large embroidered collar and with trousers very wide at the bottom. On his head was a wide-brimmed straw hat which surely was very unlike a sailorâ€™s hat. Tommy however was not a sailor though there was no knowing what he might be later in life; as yet he had not launched his bark for a voyage of his own but had only been towed along in the wake of larger craft. In one chubby hand was carried a doll-like figure knitted from yarn stuffed with bran and adorned with fierce mustachios like a Spanish cavalier. This was Jock -- Tomyâ€™s constant companion.
