188015390London: Bacon's Map Establishment 127 Strand 1880. 760 by 1080mm. 30 by 42.5 inches. Lithograph map with original hand colouring dissected and laid on linen folding into red cloth covers lettered in gilt pricelist and instructions labels on pastedowns upper board detached. George Washington Bacon 1830-1922 was an American publisher working in Britain. His first business failed and he declared bankruptcy in 1867 but reopened on the Strand in 1870 and built his house into one of the most successful in London. The map of Kensington spans from Paddington to the north and Fulham to the south and Hammersmith to the west and Green Park to the east. It prominently shows the Henry Lovibond & Son Cannon Brewery on the Lillie Road highlighted with red circles radiating from it in half mile increments with the first being a quarter mile in distance. Henry Lovibond c.1840-1910 was a brewer from Clerkenwell who acquired 'The Hermitage' villa and the remnants of its park on the corner of Lillie and North End Roads in 1867 and in the same year he built his Cannon's brewery there. Kensington was already an affluent borough after substantial redevelopment in the early nineteenth century but in recent decades it had become a cultural centre as well. The Great Exhibition took place in Hyde Park in 1851 and the cultural complex known as Albertopolis began to form: the South Kensington Museum & School now the Victoria & Albert Museum opened in 1857 the Natural History Museum in 1881 and in 1881 and the Royal Albert Hall in 1871. 3731184
London: Lithographed by Bacon & Co. Map Publishers and Importers of American Maps and Books 1864. 27½ x 19 inches. Vibrantly hand-colored. Two closed tear expertly mended on verso with tissue. Housed in archival Mylar sleeve. Very good.

An unusual 1864 Civil War map distinguishing territory controlled by the Federal Union from that remaining in possession of the Confederacy. Together areas tinted purple green and yellow show the claimed territory of the Confederate States at the beginning of the war basically all the slave states except Delaware most of it under Confederate military control.

A closer reading of the map’s color key however reveals a shrinking Confederacy. Green areas emphasize territory reclaimed by the Union leaving the yellow portion to show the narrowing Rebel remains. Importantly the reclaimed Union territory includes areas of high slave concentrations now oases of Black emancipation. These comprise the Virginia Tidewater the Sea Island coast of South Carolina and Georgia and the Black Belts of Northeastern Mississippi and along the Mississippi River from Tennessee to New Orleans. A table below the title reporting free and slave populations shows that the number of slaves under Confederate control was reduced by ~38% as of January 1864.

The depiction of the Rocky Mountain territories of the West is notable. Dakota Territory expands through present-day Montana to meet Washington State and “Idao†so spelled i.e. Idaho lacks its upper panhandle and includes today’s Wyoming. Other features of the West include the outline of “Indian Territory†now Oklahoma and the location and names of multiple forts and military camps there and in central and western Texas two “Camp Colorados†New Mexico and Arizona all areas formerly claimed as Confederate territory.

Eberstadt: “The special feature which gives outstanding interest to this cartographical production is the inclusion of all that was hereafter to be Wyoming within the boundaries of Idaho and the naming of that Territory ‘IDAO.’†The map was issued with Massie’s America: The Origin of her Present Conflict; her Prospect for the Slave and her Claim for Anti-Slavery Sympathy…. 563531Unbound. Near Fine. Single leaf folded to make four pages sent from Boston and dated November 12 1879. Folded as mailed. Modest soiling at the folds else near fine. The first three pages consist of a letter from Bacon later the co-founder of publishing company Allyn and Bacon responding to a letter from William Cullen Bryant and concerning an article in the Spiritualist newspaper Banner of Light that was about to appear detailing the Spiritualist practices of William Lloyd Garrison:

"Mr. Garrison was a pronounced Spiritualist - always consistently and intelligently so at least for the past twenty years. His frequent conversations with me his attendance at my home where he met Mrs. Richmond then Tappan Hudson-Tuttle and others of like character; his visits to Mrs. Hardy his attendance at circles spiritualist meetings &c. &c. evidence the fact beyond all cavil. Your few lines in connection with the pertinent extract from Pillsbury will be in this weeks Banner. To-morrow eve Phillips lectures for the first time on Garrison. I wrote him to-day not to fail to emphasize G.'s Spiritualism."

The final leaf of the letter is an Autograph Note Signed by William Cullen Bryant "Bryant" and dated four days later forwarding Bacon's letter to Parker Pillsbury: "The current no. of The Banner you will see contains your testimony to Mr. G's Spiritualism." He goes on to promote "Mr. Chadwick's new book 'The Faith of Reason' is almost ready Roberts Bros. of Boston. Help its sales if you can. It will have 254 pages & be sold for $1 & will be a book after my own heart - having read it in proof I speak advisedly." A nice interconnection of 19th Century progressive literary figures clearly not above displaying their curiosity about Spiritualism. unknown
