16183463London: Bonham Norton and John Bill 1618. Rare first edition first issue of the defense of James Is execution of Sir Walter Raleigh written by Francis Bacon and with according to Bacon very material additions by the king himself. The work describes the circumstances surrounding Raleighs final voyage to America in 1618 with the purpose of locating a fabled gold mine and includes the text of Raleighs commission. In the event his expedition ended up seizing the island of St. Thomas and killing its Spanish governor an ostensible act of war against Englands ally. Back in England Raleigh who had already been sentenced to death in 1603 on another conviction was tried by a commission headed by Bacon and executed in October 1618. The English public was appalled: To sacrifice to a concealed enemy of England the life of the only man in the nation who had a high reputation for valor and military experience was regarded as meanness and indiscretion and the intimate connections which the king was now entering into with Spain being universally distasteful rendered this proof of his complaisance still more invidious and unpopular David Hume History of England. The present volume is the governments hasty attempt to justify the execution. Bacon as a member of the council that had sentenced Raleigh appears to have been the main author. In a letter to a friend he mentioned the work and the kings input: We have put the Declaration touching Raleigh to press with his Majestys additions which were very material and fit to proceed from his Majesty cf. Pforzheimer 819. The work is known in at least two issues a first issue of 63 pages and a second of 68. STC and Pforzheimer originally took the present to be the second issue but the STC has since revised its opinion based on the research by Starkey published in his Library article of 1948. 19347731London: J. Weiner for Roadway Publications 1934. Lithograph in colours 40 x 50 inches 101.5 x 127 cms blank verso; quad royal map published for display in stations across the Underground network. The first edition of this map was printed in 1932 but the introduction of Beck's diagram did not obviate the need for geographically accurate maps which pinpointed the location of Undergound stations in the central area in relation to the surface topography. The lines themselves though colour-coded are given minimal prominence so as not to disrupt the street plan. The red discs denoting stations are in the style of the earliest roundels introduced in 1908 and superseded by the modern bar and circle bullseye in 1917. In the context of this map even in minte form they prove a highly effective means of drawing the eye to the stations without intruding greatly on the surrounding cartography. The map was printed under licence from G.W. Bacon & Co Ltd a firm noted for its large-scale mapping of London whether in the form of folding maps or the detailed Atlases of London and Suburbs published from the 1880s onwards. Map J. 1629913London: Printed by Iohn Hauiland and are sold by R. Allot 1629. This 1629 edition contains all 58 essays. And is the First edition to contain The colors of good and evil. Bound in the original limp vellumlacking ties recently recased and a little rumpled but a very largeclean and unsophisticated copy of an early quarto edition. His long attempt to reform the intellectual habits of the European mind began with the publication of The Advancement of Learning in 1605 which attacked the unprofitable scholasticism that inhibited the growth of knowledge and the mental prejudices that helped to keep men in ignorance. Above all he deplored the poor and confused state of knowledge about the operations of the natural world. Novum Organum begun about 1608 published 1620 called for a systematic study of the natural world and of the causes of things and proposed the inductive method as the most reliable instruments of enquiry. Bacon worked out the principles of the experimental method in this book and developed them in De Augmentis 1623. Sylva Sylvarum a proposal of 1000 experiments to be undertaken was published posthumously in 1627 together with New Atlantis a Utopian fragment written about 1617 that urged the foundation of a college for scientific research. A short book that enjoyed much popularity in his lifetime was De Sapientia Veterum 1609 translated as The Wisdom of the Ancients 1619 which tried to demonstrate that the myths of the Greeks were coded accounts of their knowledge of the physical world.†Quoted from The Seventeenth Century by Graham Perry pages 264-265. “Bacon’s Essays the fruits of his political and social observations were first published in 1597 enlarged in 1612 and again in 1625. This 1629 edition contains all 58 essays. And is the First edition to contain The colors of good and evil and has divisional title page; register is continuous. Some copies may have been issued without this but the present copy has it.

“Of Bacon’s literary as distinct from his philosophical and professional works far the most popular and important are the Essays they are the most original of all Bacon’s works those which in detail he seems to have thought out most completely for himself apart from books and collections of commonplaces. The last edition referring to that of 1625 the first to contain all fifty-eight essays teems indeed with quotations and illustrations but they are suggested by his own matter and do not suggest it. Though the Essays have the same title as the larger collection of Montaigne the two works have little in common except that rare power of exciting interest and the unmistakable mark of genius which is impressed on them both.†DNB

STC 1149; Gibson 15 Pforzheimer 31. 18760008153
On offer is the working log and financial ledger of a sea captain in the Connecticut River and coastal trade moving coal and stone by water between the river towns of Connecticut and larger coastal markets.

The book belonged to Captain Charles Hubert Bacon 1843-1917. Captain C.H. Bacon was part of a lineage of New England sea captains whose coastal trade in raw materials laid the foundation for an expanding America transporting the stone and coal that built the booming New York metropolis. See biographical notes for more on the Bacon family.

For nearly 100 pages Bacon's log tracks almost two years of his workload as Master of schooners mainly the George Gillum which historical newspaper records show Bacon as Master for many parts of the years 1876-1879. A further 38 pages at the rear of the diary act as a ledger of the Captain's work-related debts and payments to local tugboats laborers and others providing further insight into the people and boats with whom he did business.

Capt. Bacon's meticulous record keeping allows researchers to trace his exact routes and the expenses associated with his work. For example on some days he would load up coal at Chappell's Dock in New London CT from FH. Chappell & Co. on the Thames and deliver to places like Gowanus Creek Red Hook and Harlem. He indicates stops at Portland Haddam and Maromas which were hubs for brownstone and granite quarries. He also references stops at other Eastern Seaboard hubs and ports such as Tottenville New London New Haven Wethersfield Rock Landing Essex and more.

The log is especially interesting for its repeated references to tugboat towing. Captain Bacon frequently notes when his schooner was taken in tow identifying the tug the route or location and the amount paid. He is frequently towed by the O.V. Coffin a steam tug built in 1870 in Philadelphia PA. but he also worked with dozens of other captains and vessels in towing his schooner to its destinations.

Some of the dozens of other vessels he names are Steam Tugs such as the Admiral Farragut A.M. Smith J. Warren Coulston. He similarly discusses many Steam Propellers such as the General A.E. Burnside which was owned by Thames Tow Boat and Co. and captained at the time by Roswell M. Waterman. Finally Capt. Bacon interacted frequently with other ship captains such as Master Richard L. Buell who at this time was master of the Gleam a Sloop built in Brookhaven New York. Excerpts:

"Towed to Saybrook by the tug O.V. Coffin $12.00…" Nov 26 1876.

"Cash for towing in and out of Gowanus Creek by the Hattie Backus $9.00. Sailed from Red Hook to Perth Amboy. Arrived at 3 PM" Dec 5 1877

Tracking the daily minutiae of a 19th-century coasting captain such as Capt. C.H. Bacon down to the specific tugboats hired the exact routes sailed and the costs for wharfage and stevedores is crucial. It transforms abstract economic history into tangible human reality.

These hyper-local ledger entries act as the raw unfiltered data of the American Industrial Revolution revealing the true fluctuating market rates for labor and transport that official government summaries often smoothed over or missed entirely. By mapping these granular transactions historians can reconstruct the intricate messy supply chains that built modern cities demonstrating exactly how independent contractors and everyday laborers physically drove massive economic shifts one ton of coal and one block of brownstone at a time. Some representative excerpts follow:

"Towing from Saybrook to Middletown by Tug AM Smith $15.00 Arrived at 12 Midnight" April 26 1877

"Finished discharging and sailed to the Quarry. Cash for discharging 159 tons of coal at is $2224" April 27 1877.

"Sailed from Off Old Field to Layhook Canchored at 2pm R Buell Pilot at Layhook Towing from Layhook to Middleton by the Tug J.W. Coulston $12.00" May 12 1877

"Discharging stone for Samuel Dean & Bro stoneyard in Brooklyn Gowanus Creek…Tow for Help $10.50. Wharfage $6.00" Dec 4 1877

This would be a highly desirable addition to a collection focused on maritime archives the urban development of New York or the Northeast coasting trade during the Industrial Revolution offering a primary lens into the grit stone and everyday enterprise that literally built modern America.

Condition: The book is leather-bound measures approx 5.75x3.5 inches and contains about 120 pages. It is 100% complete with the majority of the book being Bacon's daily log and embedded financial notes and the final 38 pages being a ledger of financial transitions where he lists debts to be paid and payment dates. The manuscript is written in pencil and is legible. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition with expected signs of age.

Bio Notes: Charles Hubert Bacon 1843-1917 was born in Middletown Middlesex County Connecticut to parents Captain Charles Bacon 1815-1902 and Eunice Bridgham 1816-1851. His father was a sea captain for many years but by the 1870 census the senior Bacon had given up sailing for a life of farming which is how the young Cpt. Bacon was confirmed as the keeper of this log book.

In 1868 Capt C.H. Bacon married Adaline Annolia Bailey 1850-1930 and together they had at least seven children. One of their sons Cpt. Charles Russell Bacon 1871-1937 continued the family tradition of captaining ships on the river and after working his way up was best known for commanding the SS Hartford which ran between New York City and Hartford until 1931 when it was retired and scrapped.

The First Carlist War was a civil war in Spain from 1833 to 1840 the first of three Carlist Wars. It was fought between two factions over the succession to the throne and the nature of the Spanish monarchy: the conservative supporters of the late king's brother Carlos de Borb¢n or Carlos V became known as Carlists carlistas while the progressive supporters of the regent Maria Christina acting for Isabella II of Spain were called Liberals liberales cristinos or isabelinos. Aside from being a war of succession about the question who the rightful successor to king Ferdinand VII of Spain was the Carlists' goal was the return to an absolute monarchy while the Liberals sought to defend the constitutional monarchy.
