A scarce history of England comprising of a series of thoughtful questions and answers that span the history of the country illustrated throughout. The fourth edition of this scarce work.Illustrated with a frontispiece and ten plates.ESTC citation number N469179.Adverts to leaf A6. Collated with eleven plates. Twelve plates are called for but we have yet to see a copy that matches this. A unique history of England told through a series of questions and answers spanning from the invasion of Julius Caesar up to the year 1788. This format is a useful technique for education forming a series of basic questions which lead onto deeper historical questions. The substance of this text is extracted from the works of celebrated historians including Rapin Tindal Hume and Smollett. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the leather and a little lighter rubbing to the paper with a small amount of loss to the front board. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light surface cracks to the spine. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Frontispiece is a little closely trimmed to the margin not affecting the illustration. Very Good S. Crowder hardcover

Optical view heightened in watercolor depicting a view of Saint Peter's in Rome. Optical views also called views perspectives or ""mondo nuovo"" are engravings very fashionable between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. They were intended to be observed through a set of several mirrors or by means of a Zygrascope an instrument consisting of a mirror and a lens. Optical views can be considered as the precursors of three-dimensional images and stereoscopes which enjoyed great success from the 19th century onwards. Optical views seem to appear in the 1740s and were drawing room entertainments. The process was first developed in Paris then London and finally in Germany and was dedicated to representing - in an idealized manner - the most famous panoramas and landscapes of the Orient and the West.
