I consider with dissatisfaction sorrow and pain that my books my once dear books have been a chief cause of my unhappiness." A curious bildungsroman of a suicide told as though taken from his journal; the protagonist seems to fallen into poverty after defying his father's wishes to study law and failed in his love of a woman leaving him alone to wander the streets of New York alternating with nights in study over his book collection. His suicide note is found on an open volume of Francis Bacon. To call this personal story of life on the streets of New York a proto-Beat novel the ardent and introspective hero forsakes polite company leaves behind a copy of Byron that has been fished out of the river etc. is of course a bookseller's conceit--but one perhaps closer to the mark than most such claims.
