A celebratory poem in four cantos on the four election paintings of William Hogarth The prefatory Advertisement is signed by John Smith who states that he is writing on behalf of the "concealed Author" and that while Hogarth's paintings have been explained by others "none ever gave him Hogarth so much satisfaction as the present Performance." Spleman's history stretches from Xerxes' invasion of Greece and the Greco-Persian Wars to later becoming more focused on British history and particularly the English Reformation.This second edition aims to rearrange striking anecdotes lost in the appendix and instead moved to the introduction allowing for a more entertaining read. In half calf half marble boards. Externally smart with minimal marks to marble boards and the odd rubbing mark to calf heavier to the edges and to the extremities. Slight fading to spine and rubbing to spine label. Marble end papers are bright and clean. A bookseller's stamp to the front and to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound.
