1900001866Richmond VA: The Albemarle Paper Mfg. Co. 1900. Softcover. Very good. First edition n. d. ca 1900; 6 x 3 1/2; chromolithographed wraps; 18 sheets of thick blotting paper bound with a brass rivet in lower left corner; small circular indentation to lower margin; a few minor spots of foxing to front wrap only; very good condition. The Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company was founded in 1887 in Richmond Virginia by a group of local businessmen who had been convinced that the paper industry would be the most innovative and successful one for the second half of the 19th century. Situated by the James River the factory manufactured both craft and blotting paper. In 1918 one Floyd Gottwald joined the company as an employee and by the late 1940s he was its president. In 1962 he and the Albemarle Co. would become famous for the largest buyout in history when he purchased the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation for $190 million and began manufacturing polyethylene bags anti-knock compounds for fuel etc. The current sample book a throwback to the company's early days offered beautiful blotting paper in brilliant colors and various weights. There is no date or indication of whom the photographer might be but an occasional automobile indicates a time frame of about 1930. Views are in the smaller towns outside of Mexico City with a couple of exceptions. They all indicate a trained professional photographer's eye. See photos. 18500000269Bretagne 1850. Contemporary pebbled green morocco. Very Good. Collection of 119 expertly pressed mounted and labeled marine algae from Bretagne coast circa. Mid 1800's. Small 4to24.5 x 17.2 cm. Contemporayry green morocco binding. Collation: 119 lv each leaf mounted on stub with single labeled specimen. Each specimen is identified with earlier Latin name in black ink and later additions in red ink. All specimens are well preserved and beautifully displayed on the page. Binding has raised bands; title in gilt in upper panel. There is sunning on the spine and along the hinges and edges of boards less so for the later. Minor wear to ends of spine. Monogram "SB" in calligraphic style in gilt in each corner of boards. The inner covers are elaborately detailed in gilt dentils and additional inner borders. Pastedowns and free end papers in fine marble paper. This private collection is the most elaborate that we have had and represents a personal collection of "SB" who has made the presentation of the algae growing along the coast of Britany most appealing and scientifically important. <br/><br/> unknown books

An interesting advertisement piece for the Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Co. which was established in 1842 and operated until the 1970s. Founded by Eugene and Paul Ketterlinus the business would quickly become known for printing color stock cards and manufacturers label earlier than any other company in Philadelphia.
