1881002777S. l. Chicago : s. n. 1881. Very good. Albumen print on a card mount behind glass in a tramp art frame n. d. print ca 1881 frame ca 1900; image approx. 4 1/4 x 6 frame 6 3/4 x 8; print with a crease to upper left corner light age-toning and a few small spots not examined outside of the frame; frame recto gilded with minor flaking of paint and light dust-dulling; overall in very good condition. Originally created for Harper's Weekly by Sol Eytinge in 1878 the scene was one in a racist series of African-American caricatures which revolved around the courtship and marriage of two women - "The Twins." Shown strolling down the street hand in hand with their new husbands the features and gestures of the four were greatly exaggerated mocking their attempts at copying white society's refined manners. Around them were children friends and family - staring and pointing - and an older woman leaning on a tree almost doubled over in laughter at the spectacle. s. n. unknown books

Though the artist is unnamed several candidates have been mentioned including Ooka Shumboku. 18th century editions of Toba-e books are becoming increasingly uncommon. In a custom clasped chitsu case. 45800New York: 1952. Three original black-and-white photographs 4" x 6". Captioned in pencil on versos "10/15/1952". Fine condition. Three snapshots by an unknown amateur photographer depicting a 1952 street protest against Soviet occupation of the Baltic States. The protesters can be seen carrying placards in front of a large Horn & Hardart warehouse possibly in lower Manhattan. Signs read "Soviets Out of Lithuania;" "USSR is NOT Russia!;" "Stalin's Gang is not the Russian People;" "Stop Genocide in the Baltic States" etc. The protest would have coincided with the final throttling of the organized resistance movement in Lithuania following a series of mass deportations to Siberia of Lithuanians and other Baltic dissidents that began immediately following the Second World War and lasted until Stalin's death in 1953. Presumably a localized protest as we have been able to find no published record of it in contemporary newspaper reports; but an evocative glimpse into Cold War-era sentiments among Americans of Easter-European descent. unknown books
