3001S.l. n.d. 20th century. Watercolor on paper. Matted visible 163 x 83 mm and framed 257 x 150 mm. This weird and wonderful watercolor may be something we will forever regret selling at any price. It is unsigned but clearly by an artist of considerable imagination. We find the image compelling and highly curious: in the shadow only one hand is holding the mask and yet the girl is firmly grasping it with two. What is the significance of this demonic mask and why would a girl be presenting it above her head in a manner that could almost be described as ritualistic The child seems to gaze away from the viewer but who - or what - is she looking at We unable to explain our fascination with this watercolor. For those who are similarly ensorcelled: no explanation is required. unknown books

16795420Burgos 1679. No Binding. Very Good. Folio 28.5 x 19 cm. 1 f. title page 14 ff. with engraving on title page. Disbound. Very minor handsoiling a few leaves trimmed close at upper margin resulting in partial loss of printed folio numbers manuscript foliation contemporary annotations to final page. Generally very good. Very rare Spanish legal document concerning tithes certified between the Archbishop of Granada Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman served 1677-92 and the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Granada. While the text offers a fascinating and surprisingly detailed account of this ecclesiastical suit and is especially rich in prosopographical material the work is primarily of importance for its early copperplate engraving of the Virgin of Atocha depicted as the miraculous patroness of Madrid. The revered statue a wooden carving now thought to date from the thirteenth century is here depicted clothed in its golden baroque regalia and crowned with radiating halos for centuries the Virgin accrued the rich votive offerings of royal visitors. Housed in the Basilica de Neustra Señora de Atocha in Madrid the Virgin was long especially favored by the kings and queens of Spain and her presence on the title of this legal document functions as a manner of royal certification the text ends with the printed approval of Carlos II here simply "YO EL REY". OCLC and KVK locate only one copy of this text that housed at the Universidad de Sevilla. Not in Palau; the present copy collates with the Seville copy.

unknown books

1770103721770. Hand-coloured engraving. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 14 1/8 x 20 1/8 inches. A wonderful romantic view in the grand tradition of the picturesque English landscape.

Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes of the English countryside. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints.

Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 p. 155; Lugt Les Marques de Collections Supplement 2715a. unknown books
