His suicide note is found on an open volume of Francis Bacon. To call this personal story of life on the streets of New York a proto-Beat novel the ardent and introspective hero forsakes polite company leaves behind a copy of Byron that has been fished out of the river etc. is of course a bookseller's conceit--but one perhaps closer to the mark than most such claims.
