Fourth edition; 12mo 18 x 10.5 cm; a little toned front hinge reinforced; contemporary tree calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine joint and headcap repaired slightly scuffed and rubbed very good; 6 3-149 13pp.
An early Glasgow printing of this interesting outsider's take on English society and its people precipitated by Voltaire's exile to Great Britain in 1726.

The resulting Letters first published in 1734 following his return to Paris express his great admiration for the comparative religious freedom enjoyed by England's Quakers and Socinians as well as its constitutional monarchy 'where the Prince is all powerful to do good and at the same time restrain'd from committing evil' the implication being that England could provide a model for France's reform p.53. When the French edition was published the following year without the approval of the royal censor as Lettres Philosophique it caused a storm with copies confiscated and publicly burnt and Voltaire again forced to flee Paris.

The work remains one of Voltaire's most widely known and read texts which helped introduce Bacon Locke and Newton to Europe's Enlightenment thinkers. It also contains an early account of Newton's famous discovery of gravity passed on to Voltaire by Newton's niece Catherine Barton as well as an early translation into French verse of Hamlet's soliloquy from Act 3 Scene 1: 'Demeure il faut choisir & passer à l'instant / De la vie à la mort ou d l'Etre au neant.' p.173.

Widely ranked as Voltaire's most important early philosophical work and 'the first bomb hurled against the Ancien Régime' Babson.
ESTC T137639. 192355063Paris: René Kieffer 1923. Near fine. Lavish limited edition of this landmark in speculative fiction with rich images hand-colored in pochoir in Hémard's characteristic 1920s style - and an original drawing by him. In this conte philosophique originally published in French in 1752 Voltaire uses a fantastic voyage in the tradition of Jonathan Swift to satirize life on planet Earth. The title character a giant named Micromegas who lives on a planet near Sirius is banished in Voltairean style for writing a book that "was condemned by judges who had never read it." He journeys with an inhabitant of Saturn through our solar system; together their observations emphasize the smallness of Earth compared to the vastness of the universe and man's folly in believing himself to be at its center. This playful 1920s edition beautifully printed on French handmade paper lusciously bound by Kieffer and vividly hand-colored is a particularly fitting production for a modern take on Voltaire's satire. 9.75'' x 6.25''. Bound by the publisher Kieffer in elaborately stamped red leather with design after Hémard gilt-lettered spine original wrappers bound in. Illustrated by Hémard with pochoir vignettes throughout. 1777ST20535-04La Haye The Hague but Geneva: Aux dépens des Libraries 1777. FIRST EDITION. 215 x 140 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2". 1 p.l. 303 3 pp.
Publisher's marbled paper wrappers flat spine edges untrimmed. A Large Paper Copy. Benesco 1860. Andrew R. Morehouse "The Voltaire Collection in the Rare Book Room" The Yale Library Gazette 17 no. 4 1943 p. 75.
Paper wrappers a bit faded as expected slightly defective at corners and a little curled otherwise and perhaps even so A VERY FINE COPY--the text within immense margins entirely clean fresh and bright.

This is a remarkable survival in its original wrappers of a work related to one of the most resonating controversies of Voltaire's life and writings--the question of his anti-Semitism. A giant of the Enlightenment and one of the greatest of French writers and philosophers Voltaire real name François-Marie Arouet 1694-1778 writes here in response to "Lettres de quelques Juifs portugais allemands et polonais à M. de Voltaire" a 1776 critique by Antoine Guénée objecting to the anti-Semitism especially as expressed within a commercial context in our author's "Dictionnaire Philosophique." Deeply philosophical and leavened with satire the 120 chapters of the seminal "Dictionnaire" were widely read much condemned and not infrequently burned as they challenged religious authority advocated for toleration and dealt with many social and political issues from an uncomfortable Enlightenment perspective. And there can be no doubt that Voltaire's "Dictionnaire" does in fact contain critical remarks about the Jews; at the same time the author's criticism is extended with equal warmth to organized religion in other forms. In the present response to Guénée Voltaire is nothing if not scathing which in the end works against him. As Voltaire scholar Andrew R. Morehouse wryly puts it the text here expands upon Voltaire's previous points in such a way as to "justify the accusation that he is cruelly anti-Semitic." This work is not exactly rare but it is very unusual to find it in original wrappers as here particularly in such fine condition. Aux dépens des Libraries unknown
