In a lovely green morocco binding with the original paper wraps bound in to the rear. First edition thus the first edition of this limited work. The princess of Babylon is a philosophical tale written by Voltaire in 1768. It centres on Amazan a handsome shepherd and Formosanta the Princess of Babylon. Their love and jealousy drive them to travel the world. Illustrated with twelve plates by Barte. In the original French. With the bookplate of Dr Jaromira Rasina to the front pastedown. Dr Jaromira Rasina was the president of the federation of Czech bibliophiles. There is an ink inscription to the recto of front endpaper and a photograph of Dr Jaromira Rasina's writing desk. The inscription reads 'The writing-table of the Czech writer philosopher and mystical poet Dr Jaromira Rasina lover of bees and books president of the Federation of Czech Bibliophiles at Hvar where he lived and worked from 1938 until his death on Nov 10 1951. He was then sixty years old. The inscription is signed by Rasina's secretary of 21 years. There is a second inscription addressed to the individual Rasina's secretary gifted the book to. This is numbered 6 of 50 copies on Japon paper. In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart. Cracks to the joints which are slightly rubbed. Fading to the spine. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Inscriptions to the recto of front free endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright. With just the occasional light spots. Voltaire was becoming a major correspondent on European affairs and published Historie de la guerre de 1741 and then the work was translated into English in 1756. ESTC 137642 in their note specifically says "not a reissue of the 1st edition". The first edition which had 292 pages had several errors hence the corrected edition in the same year. Bound in full contemporary calf handsomely rebacked to style ruled and lettered in gilt corners worn edges rubbed some off-setting from binding glue to first and last few leaves but only margins not affecting text.
