1922C00008408Munich 1922. First printing. Hardcover. Very good. No. XVII of 35 sets of the 20 etchings in two states proof and finished each signed and numbered. The published text volume was printed in an edition of 250 copies with 20 etchings by Friedrich Heubner similarly bound in vellum. 35 of those were accompanied by this portfolio bound in full vellum 13 x 10.25 inches housing the 40 etchings each of which is numbered in pencil and signed all in very good or better condition occasional light signs of wear one plate with some tanning. Friedrich Heubner 1886-1974 was a Munich-based artist illustrator and graphic designer associated with "Die Sechs" a group of young modernist artists and he was also loosely associated with both the Berlin and Munich Secession movements. Primarily an illustrator his works appeared in Jugend Simpliccimus and Die Gartenlaube. The book which this suite accompanies can often be found for sale online. hardcover

Written by François-Marie Arouet a French Enlightenment writer philosopher satirist and historian known by his nom de plume Voltaire. Famous for his wit criticism of Christianity and of slavery and as advocate of freedom of speech freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Translated by Tobias George Smollett a Scottish writer and surgeon. In the original tooled calf. Externally smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Lacking the spine label. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Further spotting and the odd small mark to the endpapers. Stated Second Edition Corrected the original edition in the original French having been published the year prior and includes "A New and Correct Map of Sweden" in fold-out up-front two-panel and quite fine in clarity and sharpness. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy but complete and still pretty sturdy. Bound in a short octavo hardcover format 7 3/4" x 5" tall and wide respectively. Joints cracked stitches showing but holding tips and edges scuffed but still stands solidly on its own on the shelf. Fine black-and-white engraving of the 12th King Charles of Sweden at frontis by Vandergucht and a lovely publisher device opposite at title page. Original calf binding scaling but intact. Five raised bands to spine chipping to spine head. Text remarkably free of foxing; interior crisp and white and surprisingly bright. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box oatmeal sailcloth with oblong brown leather label affixed neatly to front panel gilt title stamped there. Contains signature "Chr. Wren Junr. 1737" on front endpaper then also inside front flap and below first signature all in pen not yet authenticated signature of the architect's son who died in 1747. Sir Christopher Wren 30 October 1632 - 8 March 1723 the noted influential English architect astronomer mathematician and physicist was best known for having conceived and had built St. Paul's Cathedral but also according to his Wikipedia entry "the Royal Hospital Chelsea the Old Royal Naval College Greenwich and the south front of Hampton Court Palace." He was also the father of the perhaps former owner of the present volume Christopher Wren Jr. The Senior Wren's career having been established in full by 1669 he in that year at age 37 married his childhood neighbor "the 33-year-old Faith Coghill daughter of Sir John Coghill of Bletchingdon" and who for him bore two children "Gilbert born October 1672 who suffered from convulsions and died at about 18 months old and Christopher born February 1675. The younger Christopher was trained by his father to be an architect. It was this Christopher that supervised the topping out ceremony of St Paul's in 1710 and wrote the famous Parentalia or Memoirs of the family of the Wrens." Were it authentic the signature here would put him as having been roughly 62 years of age at signing 1675–1747; Christopher Wren Jr. "of Wroxall Abbey Warwickshire was a Member of Parliament" Wikipedia. xi 2 2-371 pp. All in an attractive early edition of an important work and perhaps with exceeding provenance.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. With one plate to the Letters of a Peruvian Princess collated and complete. With two plates to Devil on Two Sticks collated and complete. With two plates to The Adventures of Launcelot Greaves collated and complete. With three plates to The History of Pompey the Little collated and complete. With two plates to the first volume of The Tales of Gen and three plates to the second volume collated and complete. The History of Pompey the Little by Francis Coventry is bound with Voltaire's Zadig. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes except Tales of the Gen. William Raynes has also inscribed his name in ink to the recto of the front endpaper of The History of Pompey the Little. It is possible that the set belonged to the socialist politician of the same name who was nominated as Derby's first Labour mayor in 1921. In a contemporary tree calf binding. Externally generally smart. With a scuff in the calf to the second volume of Tales of Gen. The Letters of a Peruvian Princess is missing a quarter of the spine label and the spine label to Pompey the Little is a little chipped. The spines are cracked with a little wear to the head and tail of the spines. The front joint of Launcelot Greaves is beginning to crack and the front hinge is starting to Devil on Two sticks The Adventures of Launcelot Greaves and both volumes of the Tales of the Gen but is firm across all four. The rear hinge is starting but firm to the second volume of Tales of the Gen. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd patch of light foxing. Good C. Cooke hardcover
