This is an intimate peek at pre World War I America from the point of view of an intensely intelligent observer of himself the human condition and those around him. Knowlton also records his thoughts and ideas on various books and topics that he was reading or studying for his coursework at Harvard. Researchers and historians of the era would be hard pressed to find a more frank and honest diarist. BIO NOTES: Biography of Edgar C. Knowlton Edgar C. Knowlton was born on 19 Sept 1890 at Manchester New Hampshire the son of George and Alice Knowlton. His father was a druggist. Knowlton obtained his B.A. from Harvard University in 1912 his M.A. in 1913 and his Ph.D. in 1918. His "Potter Prize" dissertation was titled "Nature as an Allegorical Figure." After his schooling he entered the army and served in France during World War I. Knowlton began his teaching career in the public schools at Manchester where he is found living with his parents in the 1920 Census. He later worked at Lafayette College followed by stints at the University of Illinois Ohio Wesleyan and summer sessions at the University of Texas then at Stanford University and finally for many years in the University of Wisconsin system starting at the old La Crosse State College. A Festschrift in his honor "East Meets West" was published in 1988 by the University of Hawaii where it is stated that Prof. Knowlton was fluent in eleven languages with a working knowledge of fifteen others. Edgar Sr. appears to have retired from Wisconsin University La Crosse. He died while living at Wisconsin in November of 1978 at the age of 88 years and 1 month. For the first 112 pages the entries take up the entire pages though Knowlton is not bound by convention and carries on from one day to the next if he needs more writing space afterwards they become less full with the last third of the volume having brief entries and November and December very brief entries. Each page is one day. "A White House memoir that is the most comprehensive and substantial account of the first Trump Administration and one of the few to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the President John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. He shows a President addicted to chaos who embraced our enemies and spurned our friends and who was deeply suspicious of his own government." - dust jacket. "On June 16 2020 the Trump Justice Department attempted to block publication of this book seeking to confiscate Bolton's $2 million advance for breach of contract. On August 22 2025 FBI agents raided Bolton's home as part of a documents investigation. An AOL email account that Bolton used to submit his draft manuscript of this book was reportedly hacked by a foreign entity. On October 16 2025 he was indicted on 18 charges related to the mishandling of classified documents. The New York Times has reported that unlike with other 2025 prosecutions of high-profile Trump critics the Bolton prosecution process 'followed normal department channels'. - Wikipedia. 577 pages. 1793W1578Dublin Ireland: P. Wogan P. Byrne J. Moore and W. Jones 1793. Frontispiece vi 2 303 pages. The first printing of the Dublin edition preceded in the same year only by the 2-volume first London edition--both preceding the first U. S. edition published in 1794. The Dublin edition is significant not only for its apparent scarcity but also for the frontispiece an unusual mezzotint portrait of a younger Benjamin Franklin that appears in no other edition and has seldom if ever been reproduced. The clean and tight book has been sympathetically rebacked retaining the original red leather title patch. All edges of the textblock were stained a pale green perhaps when the rebacking was done--the staining intrudes 1/16" onto the top and bottom margins of the frontispiece.Very light and faint foxing throughout; occasional smudges in the margins. Two large but light waterstains to the frontispiece but only minor and relatively unobtrusive intrusion into the image. Missing the front free endpaper. The book's condition is much nicer than it sounds; certainly an acceptable copy for the serious collector. First Dublin Edition. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Small 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Signed by Jack O'Connor upon front free endpaper with "My Best Wishes." x 3-302 p. Black and white illustrations. "Jack O'Connor 1902-1978 grew up in Tempe Arizona in those days before World War I when a boys' own father had living memories of a truly 'wild' West. The Tempe he recalls was already in the twentieth century but the flavor of the frontier still permeated daily life. And he summons it up for the reader - the humors the absurdities the gaucheries the pleasures of the horse and buggy West - with a sort of affectionate chuckle that seems to say just a bit sadly that the old-fashioned is after all faintly ridiculous. His book is peopled with grandfathers unforgettable with black-sheep uncles with a fine and varied collection of Western characters who bring back to us an America - and a childhood - we seem to remember no matter where we were raised." - dust jacket. On offer is a remarkable original 1911 handwritten manuscript diary by a young Jewish boy named Aaron Glassberg later Aaron Glassberg Volpe living in Toronto Canada. Our writer is a smart tough mannered kid who experiences a young raw Toronto. Anti-semitism is a reality of the time and the city and this young Zionist is not a stranger to it. He so identifies with his Jewishness he identifies all his contacts by religion either by fact or intuition. He talks of many meetings of the Zionist Club. His family rents rooms and he bitterly complains of the sweet talking tenant who absconded owing $10. From Elizabeth Street near Kensington Market he travels across town daily to attend Jarvis Collegiate. Collectors and historians of early 20th century Toronto would be hard pressed to find a more explicit look at the times than this journal. On a biographical note the author goes on to become a chemist pharmacist and successful business man and doctor who was the patriarch of a family of doctors. A full length photograph of the young Glassberg is pasted to the fep. Along with the diary a large 6 x 7 inch journal style book are a large number of ephemera pieces from 1906 through 1969 relating to Aaron Glassberg and his family. 19390002008ABOARD THE HMS HERMES. Good. 1939. On offer is a sensational 1939 to 1940 manuscript relic of Britain's naval war with Germany at the immediate outset of World War II being an original diary handwritten by Captain G.P.D. Pease Royal Marine aboard the ill-fated HMS Hermes. The diary begins October 7th a mere month after the declarations of war between England and Germany 1939 with sporadic entries from October until mid-December and then another long entry in June of 1940 covering 19 folio sized 8" x 13" pages. Two later pages have damage as if glued pictures were removed with some small loss but not terrible. The ship arrives in Dakar French West Africa to cooperate with the French Navy in hunting German raiders which they then proceed to do. At one point he is invited to go up in an aircraft as an observer. Upon returning they slide across the deck and crash upside down in the sea below. He and the other two aboard were able to escape into a life raft and were rescued. He has a very long entry about this as well as a photo of them being rescued. The long June 1940 entry is interesting as it details the confusion as to what to do with the French Naval ships around them as they don't know what their allegiance is after the capitulation of the French government at that time and the establishment of the Vichy French government loyal to Germany. The Hermes was later sunk in action in 1942. Tucked in are two telegrams from the Admiralty announcing destruction of Graf Spee off Montevideo another regarding HMS Ajax ten Captain's remarks certificates all highly complimentary of his of his abilities dated 1940 - 1957 and his 1938 report card and successful passing to rank of Captain of the Royal Marines. Later he served on the HMS Superb St. Angelo and Implacable. Included are a few miscellaneous photos as well. 19360001992LYNCHBURG VIRGINIA VA THOMASVILLE NORTH CAROLINA. Good. 1936. On offer is a super fascinating manuscript relic of early Harley-Davidson motorcycle history being a 1936 original diary handwritten by the 22 year old J. Carson Little as evidenced by his personal address label "J. Carson Little "The Motorcycle Man" 3124 Campbell Av. Lynchburg VA 24501." There's another address inside that shows him living at Thomasville North Carolina. He was known as "The Motorcycle Man" because of his renown as a Harley Davidson dealer which he did for over 47 years. Only 22 years old at the writing the entire diary reflects whole life being centered around Harley-Davidson motorcycles. One online site dedicated to him provides: "J. Carson Little was the Harley dealer in Lynchburg Virginia for many many years .his incredible collection of Harley literature he had saved throughout the years. His two car garage has a fully finished upstairs room that was a Harley Museum. We learn that Mr Little used to hand out flyers regarding a noted trip to the Rose Bowl. "Hello. The following is a brief description of why I am in your town. "In 1938 Carson and a buddy rode Carson's brand new 1938 Harley from Thomasville North Carolina to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California and home again. He sold the bike in 1948 but started looking for it in 1958. It had passed through 13 owners but on the 20th anniversary of his 1938 trip he found it again. Carson and his son rode back to the Rose Bowl in 1963 the 25th anniversary of his original trip. Of course he rode the same motorcycle as he had done in 1938. He then decided to keep going back every five years "just to keep in practice". 1968 - 30th anniversary. 1973 - 35th. 1978 - 40th. 1983 - 45th and once more in 1988 for the 50th Anniversary. 19610001990ASEA ABOARD THE USS SHANGRI LA. Good. 1961. On offer is a super original group of two 2 1961 diaries and journals of a noted aircraft carrier's Mediterranean shakedown cruise handwritten by Jim Dickinson RDSN a radar man aboard the storied USS Shangri - La. Commissioned in 1944 the Attack Carrier Shangri-La participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II earning two battle stars. Like many of her sister ships she was decommissioned shortly after the end of the war but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s and redesignated as an attack carrier CVA. She operated in both the Pacific and Atlantic/Mediterranean for several years and late in her career was redesignated as an anti-submarine carrier CVS. She earned three battle stars for service in the Vietnam War. Between 1961 and 1970 Shangri-La alternated between deployments to the Mediterranean and operations in the western Atlantic out of Mayport. She sailed east for her first tour of duty with the 6th Fleet on 2 February 1961 and this is the handwritten account of her first we believe Mediterranean tour. The 6 by 3.5 inch diaries are each approximately 146 pages the first book being full second perhaps half are a real below deck 'swabbie' account much on drunken nights fights and police chases a lot of shakedown blues lousy chow heads that don't work and the like and a modicum of writing about actual duties by a personable US Navy Serviceman. 18860001060COUR D'LENE IDAHO JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA. Very Good. 1886. On offer is a sensational archive of 18 multi page letters most handwritten and some typescript from Jim Miller to his mother and sister. Mr. Miller was a senior gold and silver miner who had worked in the western United States and in Africa mostly. The letters some on company letterhead date from 1886 to 1908 and each are several pages long and diary-like having great content. Mr. Miller is an intelligent and charismatic writer detailing his work and adventures and the archive is especially rich regarding his times working for one of the largest mining operations in Southern Africa during the Boer War. He has many many striking insights observations and comments regarding the conflict. Here are some snippets: "I started out in the summer on a prospecting trip got so far into the mountains that I didn't know where I was went all by guess had no idea where I would come out and cared less. Came out finally at Lewistown on the line of Washington and Idaho Territory after traveling about five hundred miles over the toughest part of the territory. Had no particular place to go so I came to the Cour D'lene to seek my fortune. The town of Wardner is less than a year old and has over one thousand inhabitants and still increasing. The biggest mines that have ever been found in Idaho are supposed to be those that worked in and around Wardner. This country is well represented by Black Hillers the town is named after one of them. It is safe to say that one half of the people in the Cour D'lene country are from the hills. The first one that I have met since I left the hills was in Wardner. This is about like all other mining camps the principle business places are saloons and gambling halls with a few stores. The English papers would lead one to believe that British and Boer have shook hands and agree to be friends that day will never come. When the Boer prisoner returns to his farm and finds only the remains of his house what was once his happy home it will take years and years if ever they do forget the useless destruction of their homes. He is going to invite you to spend the summer with them and they would take a trip through the national park. I would like to have you go and I will pay all expenses. It will be your first chance to visit the western country and maybe George might invite you to stop at Denver the only city in the west. Labour troubles both white and black strikes are the order of the day. If it was not for the Martial law one would not know that the country was in a state of war although there are plenty of columns moving about this district about all they seem to do is travel back and forth over the same road. It is reported that all the Boer leaders are being wined and dined by the British at various centers entertained at the expense of the British taxpayer. Rumor there is a possibility of a general surrender under the terms offered anxious for peace before the coronation. This is a much larger mine then I was on in the states. It is now the third largest gold producing mine in Africa provided we get sufficient native labour it will be the largest Gold Producing Mine in the world we employ 500 white men and 3000 native. When the reports of the San Francisco disaster reached Johannesburg there were many anxious people waiting telegrams from Fathers Mothers Sisters or Brothers who were living in or near the city. I know the part that was destroyed really better than I know Joliet. Have been in Spokane four weeks trying to settle up some business. The Superintendent at the mines is more despised than Cleveland and he is considered the meanest man in the United States. The Sup has to have a body guard. I intend to start for Lewiston Idaho tomorrow expect will have a time getting there as the streams are rising very fast. The snow has been very heavy in the mountains this winter. We started to unwater the mine pumping and hauling at the rate of one million gallans per 24 hours I am unable to say how long it will take. Had a breakdown in one of the shafts and it took weeks to repair it. During that time kept the mill running from one shaft. That was the most trying time I have ever had on a mine. Can buy a woman in this country for 200 dollars in Mexican money good able bodied one quite capable of doing a mans work. While waiting at Elk City for supplies I received work from Mr Clement offering me a good position in Africa. The principle topic of the day is the unsettled question of the importation of unskilled labour there is one thing certain they can not work this country without plenty of cheap unskilled labour. The mining industry of this country is only in its infancy. It is impossible to get sufficient native labour for the natives will not work. Not being able to get up to the mines has been a great disappointment. One consolation there are thousands of others in the same fix. The less the british people say about this war the more they will shine for they have nothing to be proud of. They have been the laughing stock of the world. It seems the British Army are like their women give them time and they will finish it. There have been several instances where the Boers have surrounded and captured parties of British while the officers were enjoying a dance. Of course that is not allowed to be made public. Those in the field know everything is lost and they will continue the guerilla war as long as they know their families are well provided for the by the British. Some of the preachers who are encouraging them were taken out and shot as they have done with some Boers who went on commando again after being released. Everyone outside of military are thoroughly sick and disgusted with the whole business."
