18630001389NEWARK MENDHAM NEW JERSEY NJ. Good. 1863. On offer is a nice original manuscript relic of the Civil War year of 1863 handwritten by Emma L. Kitchell nee Reynolds of Mendham and Newark New Jersey. Emma seems to be a down to earth hardworking woman who on New Year's Day hopes the coming year finds her a better Christian. In fact the thread of religion winds its way throughout the narrative. On her 29th birthday January 27th she writes that 'about a year since I gave myself to God. Oh how unfaithful I have been. I have been devoted to God. May this year see me more.' There are some reports of the war but the year seems to be one of sickness: children with the measles bad colds sore throats fevers . Never-ending work constant sickness the war and Emma continues to 'chore'. The in February Emma writes: 'Decided to go to H & L Entertainments. Quite a treat for me to go out an evening.' Collectors historians and researchers of this era and the New Jersey area will find a treasure trove of names and local events observed and noted by Emma. In the back of the diary are cash account spending records etc. This leather diary measures 4" x 3" and overall is G.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: NEW JERSEY NJ RELIGION CHRISTIAN BAPTIST DEDICATION TO GOD KITCHELL MENDHAM NEWARK HOMEFRONT GENEALOGY CIVIL WAR GENDER STUDIES WOMEN'S STUDIES PRE SUFFRAGE HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . hardcover
19350001167RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL. Very Good. 1935. Leather. On offer is an original manuscript diary dated 1935 beginning August 17th when the author sets off on the SS American Legion with her husband Harold. Research suggests her husband's last name is Miller as she identifies 'Mother Miller' as one of the well wishers when they board the ship. Her birthday is celebrated the very next day aboard ship. She begins to study Portuguese in earnest. In Rio they stay at the 'Gloria'; she reports that everything is very queer and she is scared to death; the language is impossible; lovely descriptions of Rio de Janeiro; going to Coco Casino; the mountains. After a break of 3 weeks she begins detailed entries of her new domestic and social life in Brazil. Historians and collectors of the history of Brazil will recognize 1935 as a very interesting year given the attempted November revolution known as the 'Graf Zeppelin Revolution'. Our writer makes notes and some little commentary regarding the beginnings and ending of the rebellion. Our author does a super job recording the names of her visitors hosts and companions and the many names include; the Vidals Miss Coehlo the Davies the Shofners the Pratts Mrs. Towill the Redferns of Detroit Mrs. Redford Mrs. Oldbergh Mrs. Burr the Banfills and many many more. 19160001024RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA CA. Good. 1916. On offer is an original handwritten manuscript being a 1916 World War I diary of about 90 pages of which half are expense entries and the other half are the many intriguing writings of a cultured intelligent but 'troubled' woman including a list of books to read one highlighted book is about the traits of the German Kaiser and Kaiserina lists of lady friends a list of 'Worries' gifts for her new baby instructions to herself to write an essay using people she admires and then there are the notations that occasionally litter book such as the following: "April 18th Can I ever learn to follow that small voice that is always right. This morning I heard it faintly say don't phone Miss Celchin until you have spoken to Miss Eachus. I disregarded it and was very sorry the instant I saw Miss Eachus. What good did it do me to buy a lunch downtown today .Read this over learn a lesson if possible." A close reading suggests the author is a young woman whose husband is Armin C. Hentschke a Private in the 364th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces. Her father perhaps her grandfather resides in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania but she notes her mother has just returned from a trip to San Francisco and research suggests the woman lives near her in Riverside California. This is confirmed given the 364th Infantry was made up almost exclusively of recruits from Southern California. She appears to be of German background spelling cinema with a 'k' and she has an older son named Hans who troubles her and certainly of European background referring to her parents as Mama and Papa. The address section has names and friends from many many different places in the USA and even in Canada. 1887000922BEDFORD BEDFORDSHIRE ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN. Good. 1887. On offer is an incredible intimate look into the life and times of The Tudor Family of Bedford Befordshire England. Though she always refers to herself as "self" there are numerous other references to identify the author of this detailed day by day account as Mrs. N. L. Tudor wife of E.T. Tudor research suggests they have a role in St. Paul's Cathedral mother to Mervyn Gwen and Howell and that they are family from a large family of vicars priests deacons and reverends. A casual reading notes priest-relatives in New Zealand and one very interesting entry is regarding a relative Hugh Aldersly Tudor as returning from the Medicine Hat Diocese of the Canadian North West Territories. A later note refers to a daughter born to the Canadian branch of Tudor's in Ottawa. Handwritten the journal dates from 1887-1890 and is an account of life at Bedford as it began for the Tudors who arrived at Bedford from Burnham Somerset on Thursday September 8th 1887. Where our author does not specify herself or her husband she excels in naming visitors friends and relatives and as such this diary will provide a wealth of genealogical information besides being a super look at the times. Also noted was her apparent delight in seeing a game of 'La Crosse' played in the common. This hardbound black note book 4vo both boards nearly detached most of spine missing at the end of each year covered a page is set aside for 'remarkable events in our family & friends during the year' and many clippings attached. A casual reading finds dozens of names for visitors friends and staff. Some drawings on both boards some newspaper cuttings stuck in some pressed leaves. 19080008095ERIE PENNSYLVANIA. Fair. 1908. On offer is a chatty diary covering parts of 1908 1909 1910 and 1911. No one year is complete and entries often skip days or weeks. The front cover is missing and the back cover is only very loosely attached. The pages are sewn together. The righting is clear and legible. The writer lives in Erie PA an industrial manufacturing city that was a key link in the iron and steel industry on the Great Lakes. From context the writer appears to be a woman living with her husband and family. Her second entry notes the arrival of the 8 hour work day for telegraphers. The tone is chatty and entries include references to business personal and social life events: "The Erie strike has been declared settled and this is the day the old machinists were to return to work but none of them did. Dr. Burdette's class met tonight. Paul Huff has been taking treatment for increasing his speed in running a typewriter. This is Shrove Tues. Pancake social at Christ Church parish house this evening" Mar 3 1908. The entry for Saturday Nov 20th 1909 is typical of the talkative stream-of consciousness style of writing employed: "This was a fair day but not much sunshine. Didn't work this afternoon but Charlie and Lewie went back. In the afternoon I did a little varnishing work . using FW Devoe and Co's Oil Dark Oak Stain . the gasman came and read the meter .Esther went to the matinee of the Chicago Stock 'Genesee of the Hills' . Ma got a new hat today . we had cornmeal pancakes for supper . there were no turkeys on sale at the market . Dr. William H Crawford president of Allegheny College arrived from Europe this morning to straighten out the financial affairs of the College . Mr. Crawford will return to Rome in a short while to join his family who are spending the winter in that city . James Braggs was promoted from assistant baggagemaster to baggagemaster at the Erie station .the annual bazaar of Zion Church was held . mother and Mrs. Huff went to this sale and bought some german cookies ." Nov 20 1909. And so it goes. Factual event thoughts and gossip fill the pages: "The engagement of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. to Elinor Alexander of New York was announced several days ago. Mrs. Roosevelt has left for Africa with her daughter to meet her husband and return with him to the United States. ." Feb 15 1910. "Over half of the employees of the Pennsylvania Rapid Transit Co of that city have gone out on strike and several small riots occurred . " Feb 21. The entries end as abruptly as they began with an entry in July 1911: "Mrs Glancy made her usual appearance this morning. The price or cotton and cotton fabric has risen considerable of late and the reason is that a cotton trust has been originated" July 10 1911. 18640002285ABOARD THE SCHOONER NAPOLEON. Good. 1864. On offer is a super original Civil War era ship's log book of the Schooner Napoleon handwritten by an unknown author likely the First Mate given the statistical details provided and all manner of important details to the ship's record: weather conditions loading and unloading of all manner of cargo including cattle and even contact by gunboats seeking individuals who might be on board. Dated February 5 1864 the journal runs well into 1865. We learn that the ship Master's were Edward Soher who was then replaced by E. Nichols. The schooner went up and down the East Coast from New Haven Connecticut to Cape Hatteras North Carolina making several stops at Jersey City. Given the War was still on and they plied there trade from the Union North to the Confederate South it would not have been extraordinary for a commercial vessel to be boarded for deserters or runaways. The ½ leather oblong 4to has blue boards with paper label on front panel marbled edges and the leather is worn and frayed at the spine edges. 18760008152Collegeville Pennsylvania. Good. 1876. On offer is a small diary kept by a teacher in the centennial year of the United States. Measuring 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches the leather bound diary contains about 400 pages and is about 90% complete. The handwriting is legible and the book is in good condition. The writer is unknown. She is a teacher living away from home. Context clues suggest she lives and works in the area immediately west of Philadelphia PA. quite likely Collegeville PA. ref.: Sept 7. The students few as they are live at the school. Much of her entries make a brief comment on what is happening at her school and the letters she writes or receives. "Took the young ladies to the creek to skate before school. They enjoyed it so much they insisted on going again after dinner. We went down Miss C accompanying us. Feel somewhat the worse for our efforts at skating" Jan 15; ". Was surprised and delighted to receive a lovely letter from my friend Sally to whom I had not written for nearly two years. Sent me a lovely tie she is a dear good girl. Received a letter also from ." Jan 19. Like many small private schools enrolment was always a challenge: "Rained and I was sorry Mary had to go home but there seemed no alternative. Had a note from her saying she was very wet when she reached home. We had several new day scholars added to our slender number" April 3. On May 17th she refers to an opportunity to write a Teacher's Examination which suggests that she is not yet licensed. On June 1st she references a parade that she attended in Philadelphia which helps confirm her location and time: "A most delightful cool day. Had went to the city to witness the parade of the Knights Templar pronounces it the finest sight of its kind ever witnessed Received letter from C saying that the little daughter's name is Mabel Lois. I am greatly pleased. Wrote to Mary C" June 1. This small book is a fine record of the events in the daily life of a young woman at the centennial of the United States. Its details give a very good window into what life was like for a young unattached woman as she was beginning to make her own way in the world. 19380012229Watertown MA. Good with no dust jacket. 1938. Softcover. On offer is a notebook used to record notes on his work kept by the National Director of a large Episcopal church-based youth program in the mid-20th century. The notebook belonged to the Reverend Arthur Osgood Phinney 1892-1978. Phinney was an Episcopal Archdeacon and National Executive Secretary of youth programs within the church running camps and conferences. He also traveled frequently to the 80 dioceses across the USA promoting new methods of Christian education. Prior to his work in the church Phinney served in the US Army in France as an ambulance driver in the American Field Service. He married Lucile Flagg and together they had three boys: Frederick Arthur and William. At the time Phinney kept this notebook he was National Director of the Order of Sir Galahad having been elected in 1937 SEE NOTES ON THE ORDER OF SIR GALAHAD FOLLOWING LISTING. On the cover of the book Phinney has listed priorities related to his youth department: NY Leaders Meeting Lecture for School National Galahad Conference June 9 10 11 1939. The notebook provides a comprehensive look at Phinneys work in the year 1938. It is not always linear as he clearly used this as a work journal. A large portion is devoted to his youth ministry as Director of the Order. It contains names addresses guidelines for various aspects of his ministry etc. He makes extensive notes about the projects he is working on for the youth programs for which he is executive secretary. Some topics he notes include Counsellor Training Provincial Officers Addresses Camp Directors Seminar Suggestions for Camp O-AT-KA 1939 Objectives of the Dept on Youth Divis of Mass. Wednesday Afternoon Conference notes about what the youth would be interested in and topics to cover Leadership Training Group What is Expected of Youth Members Outside of the Church Evaluation Charts Pamphlets Youth Rally and so much more. This journal is full of Phinneys notes about how to run youth programming in the year of 1938 looking toward a summer of youth camps in 1939. His notes are in-depth lay out expectations of the youth teaching plans plans for executive meetings and state the purpose of his ideas. It is clear from this book that Phinney was deeply devoted to helping young people be good Christians and this book demonstrates how he did this. This journal could be used by any organization to guide the development of successful courses and programs for youth. One small example is how he outlines a detailed curriculum for a Leadership Course for youth. While this section is many pages an excerpt is provided where he notes General Requirements For Christian Leaders: a Consecration to the task b Social adjustability c Some special skill d Some way of self-evaluation plus a method by which others may evaluate his work. The final eight pages of the notebook contain a lecture to Canvassers for the Church which he gave at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Watertown MA in 1938. He addresses people who go out from their parish into their communities to recruit or enroll members. He openly draws from sales ideas of his time a time that was well-known for door-to-door sales. For a social historian this notebook offers an excellent tool to compare principles of youth organizations in the 1930s with those of today. The challenges regarding youth were very different in 1938 but no less daunting. Of course one thing a social historian would note immediately is that there are no references to girls they were invisible. ABOUT THE ORDER: The Order of Sir Galahad was an organization for Anglican and Episcopal boys and men founded in Boston in 1896 by the Reverend Ernest J. Dennen. The Order's activities were structured around Galahad in Arthurian legend. It was a well-structured organization and its purpose was to reach boys at a time when the club idea loomed big in a boys mind. Its goal was to interpret religion to boys in the forms of recreation and other interests. Twelve years later to aid in that goal Dennen established a camp in rural Maine called Camp O-ATKA. Today 113 years later Camp O-AT-KA continues to flourish and is the oldest continuously-run residential summer camp for boys in the United States. It is located in Sebago ME. This notebook measures 8.0x5.0 inches and contains 122 pages. The notebook is about 80% complete. The covers are in very good condition and the spine is wire-coil bound. The pages are in good condition and the writing is legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 122 pages; Signed by Author . paperback
18850011124Maine New England Usa Florida. Good with no dust jacket. 1885. Softcover. On offer is an outstanding chronicle of a year in the difficult life of a hardworking husband and father coping with a debilitating lung illness while trying to keep things going for his family. The author of the diary is Newell Moulton Varney 1831-1888. Varney was born in Tamworth New Hampshire and later moved to Sumner Maine. He was the son of Rueben H. Varney and Sophia F Moulton Varney In 1856 he was married to Lydia Cushman Bonney 1831-1922 and they raised a family of nine children though only eight survived infancy. Varney was a farmer a farrier and a carpenter. He worked his farm shod many many oxen and worked at constructing buildings and repairing equipment. Through it all his health was failing. He suffered from lung disease terribly and that is likely what caused his early demise in 1888. Varney was active in his community and often attended town meetings and was a member of the Grange a national farmers organization and secret society structured along the lines of the Masonic Order. Varney kept his diary every day from February 6 1885 to December 31 1885. Tipped into the diary is a letter dated May 1883 and some newspaper cut outs. Varney has noted his financial transactions from Feb to Dec of 1885 in detail at the back of the diary. There is also a funeral home receipt for one of Varneys children Lydia Jennie Heald who died in 1965 indicating that this diary likely came from her estate. Varneys diary depicts his lived experience in well-written detail: Clarra Bonney died this morning. Lydia is over there staid all day the travelling is bad. I worked in the shop a little today Feb 12. I have felt nearly sick all day my lungs are feeling very bad hard work to breath the weather cleared off some time in the night and blew a gale froze up hard blew all day. By December his health had failed to the extent that he decided to travel south to see if the warmer climate would help him. His entries during the trip are detailed and paint a very vivid picture of his journey. He was not happy with what he found in the South. Some excerpts: I am waiting for Mat to come and take me to the depot to take the 9 o'clock train to bear me away from home and friends and all that I hold dear on this earth for the purpose of gaining my health in Florida if it is God's will. My heart is sad & can't help the tears from streaming down my cheeks. Got started and got to Portland at eight. Went over to boat and got state room. Went to bed but did not sleep. We started for Boston at night. Got soup and coffee and went up on Fulton St. And I was sick on the boat. Bisbee who went with him vomited some Dec 23. I am not well today. My lungs are feeling bad. Cough nearly as bad as when at home. My boarding place is a dirty place for a northern man. It will do for the southern element. The food is poor and half cooked at that. The tea and coffee muddy & the milk so thin that you could see through it is it was clean. I have travelled the city. Went all over to find a decent place within my means. Have found a room but have got to go out for my meals. I took my supper in a negro restaurant. It appears to be neat but the food is so different from home that it is hard work to eat it Dec 30. He returned home. Three years later Varney passed away of what was possibly tuberculosis. 1882000716Red Creek Clyde New York. Good. 1882. On offer is an 1882 handwritten manuscript diary once belonging to Minnie L. Caywood of Red Creek in Western New York State. On the face of it Minnie's life seems busy but simple and is detailed as such. Basic notations such as getting vaccinated; Minnie's great joy from receiving a valentine's card; her responsibilities as a student and job as a teacher; her part in the Literary Society; death of old schoolmate Clara Meade village of Clyde to name just a few. But then something terrible happens at the school. It is all the more uncomfortable as she boards and teaches. She is forgiven but others are not and the tension and stress creates a situation where the boys and girls are made to turn their backs if they meet in the halls or on the campus. For the most part we understand Professor Baker the principal is terribly mean and is the main conductor directing the investigation and punishment. He is also such a looming presence that there is almost a daily note until the summer regarding his distemper. "Prof. is mean today as usual. There is Prof. walking along the fence. O how I wish I had a stone. In the evening we all went to a concert Prof. watched us quite carefully.Prof. gave the boys a fearful lecture for cutting the bell cord." A closer reading may very well reveal answers or even more mystery. Many names and details of travels in the area for supplies are recorded. Cover is in fair shape but the interior is quite good. ; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; GENDER STUDIES WOMEN'S STUDIES DIARY DIARIES HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA NEW YORK EDUCATION BOARDING SCHOOL PRE SUFFRAGECAYWOOD RED CREEK CLYDE . hardcover

1958215j1610U.S.A.: Mary C. Armstrong. Fine. 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. "The story of the life of Judge George W. Armstrong 1866-1954 is a picture of America at her best. During the last half of the nineteenth century and for about thirty years of the present century our Republic was generally governed by individuals of the character and blood of those stalwart leaders who conceived and organized it. Judge Armstrong belonged to that courageous lineage. He studied thoroughly the plans of those who would destroy our Nation took an active part in exposing their treason and assisted patriots who battled to save us. He wrote extensively to expose administrations infiltrated by governmental appointees planning our destruction. So powerful were these individuals that they exercised great control over the national press and by skillful propaganda had poisoned the minds of our citizenry. To attack them took character and courage all of which Judge Armstrong possessed in abundance." - George Van Horn Moseley Major General U.S. Army Ret'd. Armstrong's books include: High Treason The March of Bolshevism The Rothschild Money Trust The Corruption of America and many more. xviii 414 pp. Index.
