First published in the Journal of the American Oriental Society in 1979, and now revised and updated, Carter Findley's "The Making of a Perfect Orientalist?" is a scrupulously researched biography of the enigmatic nineteenth-century Turkish language scholar James W. Redhouse. Primarily embodied in two major dictionaries-A Lexicon, English and Turkish (1861) and A Turkish and English Lexicon (1890)-Redhouse's work established a crucial base for the further development of English-Turkish lexicography. Unparalleled at the time, his contributions remain vital today, forming the core of a number of bilingual English-Turkish dictionaries which still bear the Redhouse name. A brief overview of the press that published Redhouse's lexicons, as well as the reminiscences of two editors who helped revise them in the twentieth century, round out this provocative study of the life of James Redhouse.

Si tratta del magnum opus, in edizione originale, dell’importante orientalista francese Bernard Carra de Vaux (1867-1952), noto anche per avere denunciato i Massacri Amidiani contro gli Armeni(1894-1897) e per essere stato fiero oppositore dell’antisemitismo negli anni in cui infuriava l’Affaire Dreyfus. Alcune fioriture dovute alla qualità della carta (soprattutto al primo volume), ma volumi ben conservati.

This book (as well as the attached Istanbul Memoirs of the First Dutch Ambassador Cornelius Haga and the Ottoman Empire¿s official records and his Register Book about his activites in Istanbul) is a very timely contribution to the field, which once again illustrates the importance of studying the Ottoman history as world history. Halil Inalcik, Bilkent University. This book provides a fresh interpretation of the historical relations between these two important powers and also Turkey-Europe relations. In the foreword, Halil INALCIK, a prominent global historian, underlines the joint Ottoman-Dutch role in shaping the European and the World history. In the following chapter, Levent KIRVAL focuses on the history of the economic and political relations between Turkey and the European powers, and he particularly focuses on the economic and cultural interactions between the Turks and the Europeans. Subsequently, Bülent ARI, first gives brief information about the phases of Dutch revolt which started in 1567 against the Spanish oppression and then evaluates the political atmosphere of the period and the conflicts between the European states. Next, Mustafa GÜLEC evaluates the interpretations of various scholars concerning the early Ottoman-Dutch relations and gives an overall atmosphere of the commercial relations of individual entrepreneurs before the grant of Dutch capitulations. Followingly, Mehmet BULUT focuses on the commercial activities in the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th century. Consequently, Mehmet TÜTÜNCÜ has an interesting chapter under the title "Grand Dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter¿s Mediterranean Expedition and the Peace Treaties He Concluded in 1662 with Ottoman Algeria". What influences the political representation of minorities? Does a non-core group pursue a certain pattern of collective political behavior, or does it have the ability to alter it through struggle with other groups by calculating the existing opportunities and restrictions? This book addresses these important questions by focusing on the history of political representation of the Muslim-Turkish minority in Greece and the Greek-Orthodox minority in Turkey, two communities whose rights are linked to each other via the "reciprocity principle" written in the Lausanne Treaty, signed by two countries that have long-lasting conflicts. Drawing on presentation of related political history, systematic coding of parliamentary debates and works, minority and mainstream newspapers, and elite interviews, the author analyzes and explains ignored linkages between institutions, bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey, and the role of external factors that enable or constrain minority communities access to political life. This study which adopts a historical institutionalism approach and, by integrating theory of both comparative politics and international relations, shows how the minority groups political participation and the effectiveness of their representation has been determined by the triangle of the two states choice of nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization policies, mainly argues that internal factors such as groups capability for competition and institutional features of the political system in the host-state mostly override states bilateral relations with the kin-state and international factors. As a result, for the Greek and Turkish case, the host-states generally pursue the policy of state-controlled involvement of their minorities in the political life, where the existence of the threatening kin-state and minority groups strong demographic features lead to avoidance of full assimilation and exclusion from political representation.

Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". Volume solido con tracce di ossidazione non gravi su alcune pagine, peraltro solido e ben conservato.
