The caricature album of Yusuf Franko Kusa Bey, the late 19th century Ottoman bureaucrat, Minister of Foreign Affairs, governor general, man of society who was also a playful caricaturist, is exhibited for the first time. "The Characters of Yusuf Franko: An Ottoman Bureaucrat's Caricatures" displays for the first time the caricatures that Yusuf Franko compiled in an album between 1884-1896, that interact with the European caricature tradition. Through the exhibited caricatures, the visitors meet satirically charged portraits of wealthy capitalists, members of high society, Ottoman soldiers, Levantines, artists and diplomats of the late 19th century. The caricatures offer the spectators the opportunity to observe the colorful social networks, especially those of the Beyoglu / Pera quarter, which Yusuf Franko himself belonged to, and the global locales of Istanbul. By following the characters in their caricatures and the places they belong, the exhibition emphasizes how the Galata¿Beyoglu axis became a financial and diplomatic center as well as a frequent destination of international culture and arts. The exhibition, which mainly tries to evaluate the works of Yusuf Franko from the perspective of space and social networks, also touches on the significant places of the period such as the Naum Theater and it also serves as a reminder of those locales, which no longer exist and hence which have not found their way onto the album. Focusing on Yusuf Franko, the innovative caricaturist of his time and on his works, the exhibition "The Characters of Yusuf Franko: An Ottoman Bureaucrat¿s Caricatures" deals with the prominence of the Franko Kusa family within the Ottoman Empire, and with the history of the caricature in Europe. The exhibition also narrates the long trek of the album through various countries and the tale of its return to Beyoglu. In addition to the album and caricatures of Yusuf Franko Kusa, relevant photographs, documents and publications from various collections and especially from Ömer M. Koç Collection are featured in the exhibition.

Youssouf Bey: The Charged Portraits of Fin-de-Siécle Pera is a two-volume special publication (Vehbi Koc Foundation, Istanbul, 2016) that accompanied ANAMED's exhibition "The Characters of Yusuf Franko: An Ottoman Bureaucrat's Caricatures"(26 January - 01 June 2017). The edited book of articles from this special edition has been recently republished by ANAMED and, thus, is available to a larger audience. Yusuf Franko Kusa Bey (1856-1933), a high-ranking bureaucrat in fin-de-siècle Ottoman imperial administration, was also a talented caricaturist. Because of his duties in the Ottoman Foreign Ministry, and spending most of his life in Istanbul, he was both a member and an observer of high-society social circles in Pera [Beyoglu]. Ambassadors, ministers, diplomats, famous opera singers, painters, Pashas and Efendis, Madames and Monsieurs, were part of this social milieu, and most of them became eternally recorded through the 'types and charges' in Yusuf Franko's caricature album. Including images of himself, he charged his subject materials, the people in his social network, with their particular qualities and transformed their portraits into witty caricatures that reflected contemporary scenes of social life and political debates in Pera. While the articles in this book analyze the majority of Yusuf Bey's caricatures from diverse perspectives (his family history and biography, the history of contemporary European caricature art and politics, and the social and spatial context in which he drew his caricatures), the appendix gives brief information about each caricature plate in the original album. These extraordinary caricatures are published for the first time in their entirety since they were discovered in an antique rug dealer's shop in Istanbul in 1957.

First Edition. Third volume. The invasion of the Crimea: Its origin, and an account of its progress down to the death of Lord Raglan. Vol. III. Kinglake was an English travel writer and historian. He was born near Taunton, Somerset, and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which, in 1856, he abandoned to devote himself to literature and public life. His first literary venture was Eothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East (London: J. Ollivier, 1844), a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. Elliot Warburton said it evoked "the East itself in vital actual reality" and it was instantly successful. However, his magnum opus was THE INVASION OF THE CRIMEA: Its Origin, and an Account of its Progress down to the Death of Lord Raglan, in 8 volumes, published from 1863 to 1887 by Blackwood, Edinburgh, one of the most effective works of its class. The History, which Geoff Bocca describes as a book "by which no intelligent man can fail immediately to be fascinated, no matter to what page he might open it" has been accused of being too favourable to Lord Raglan and unduly hostile to Napoleon III for whom the author had an extreme aversion. The town of Kinglake in Victoria, Australia, and the adjacent national park are named after him. A Whig, Kinglake was elected at the 1857 general election as one of the two Members of Parliament (MP) for Bridgwater, having unsuccessfully contested the seat in 1852. He was returned at next two general elections, but the result of the 1868 general election in Bridgwater was voided on petition on 26 February 1869. No by-election was held, and after a Royal Commission found that there had been extensive corruption, the town was disenfranchised in 1870.

Sous son véritable nom de Julien Viaud, comme reporter et pour le plaisir, il avait pourtant composé, au fil de ses campagnes de jeune officier de marine, une remarquable ¿uvre graphique, ethnographique aussi. La voici pour la première fois réunie. Plus de cinq cents dessins, accompagnés des gravures qui en furent tirées et de textes de l¿écrivain, forment un singulier carnet de voyages autour du monde, vers les lointains de cet artiste polymorphe et raffiné : Terre de Feu, île de Pâques, Tahiti, Brésil, Amérique du Nord, Sénégal, Maghreb, Adriatique, Indochine, Japon, mais aussi Bretagne et Saintonge natale, sans oublier son cher « Stamboul ». Alain Quella-Villéger et Bruno Vercier sont les deux spécialistes de Pierre Loti et de son oeuvre, auxquels ils ont consacré de nombreux ouvrages, ensemble ou séparément (voir la bibliographie, p. 291). Ils ont notamment entrepris de conserve la publication au long cours du Journal de Loti (t. 1, 2006 ; t. 2, 2008, Paris, Les Indes savantes). Alain Quella-Villéger, natif de Rochefort, comme Pierre Loti, agrégé d¿histoire et docteur ès-lettres en histoire contemporaine, est le biographe de Pierre Loti, de Claude Farrère et de René Caillié. Il est, en outre, co-auteur d¿une dizaine d¿anthologies aux éditions Omnibus (dont Istanbul, Rêves de Bosphore, 2001), directeur et fondateur de la revue Les Carnets de l¿exotisme (1990-2006), à la suite de la Revue Pierre Loti (1980-1988), et auteur de plusieurs autres ouvrages, dont deux romans. Aux éditions Bleu autour, il a préfacé la réédition de Suprêmes visions d¿Orient (2006, 2010), le dernier ouvrage de Pierre Loti. Bruno Vercier, docteur ès-lettres et universitaire, spécialiste de l¿autobiographie et du journal intime, est co-auteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur la littérature française contemporaine (aux éditions Bordas). Il a signé l¿appareil critique de nombreuses rééditions de textes de Pierre Loti, ainsi que de Raymond Radiguet et Charles-Louis Philippe (aux éditions Flammarion et Gallimard). Il préside l¿Association pour laMaison de Pierre Loti. Enis Batur, qui vit à Istanbul et séjourne régulièrement à Paris, est l¿une des figures centrales de la littérature turque depuis vingt-cinq ans. Romancier, essayiste et poète, il est l¿auteur d¿une centaine d¿ouvrages, souvent traduits dans de nombreuses langues étrangères. En France, ses ouvrages paraissent chez Actes Sud (La Pomme, roman, 2004 ; Amer savoir, récit, 2002 ; D¿autres chemins, récit, 2008) et chez Bleu autour (D¿une bibliothèque l¿autre, 2008 ; Ottomanes, Autochromes de Jules Gervais-Courtellemont, en collaboration, 2006), où il a également préfacé trois recueils, deux de poèmes (Va jusqu¿où tu pourras, OrhanVeli, 2009 ; J¿ai vu la mer, anthologie, 2010), l¿autre de nouvelles (Le Samovar, Sait Faik Abasiyanik, 2010).
