1778033153Edinburg: John Bell at the Apollo Press 1778 A complete set of Spenser from the Bell's Edition - forming Vols 15 to 22 of the original 109 volumes. In very good condition. This set looks to be from the traveling library - with each volume being slim and bound in full red leather with gilt lines to boards and spine and gilt decoration at the board edges and inner edges. Gilt titles and volume and series numbers to spine. All page edges gilted - in circa 3 of the volumes the gilting has resulted in the occasional page appearing unopened at the top edge. All the volumes have their original page markers and all are very clean and sound. Spines tend to be darkened and there is light wear/scuffing at corners and spine ends - occasional bumping or greater wear at corners and occasional scuff or pit to boards. Endpapers marbled. Each volume has 2 initial and 2 or 3 final blanks an engraved title and 2 further title pages - one for the series and one for the Spenser set. Vol I has a portrait of Edmund Spenser. All volumes are complete with a contents listing at the end - Vol I containing introductory material and Vol VIII containing a Glossary of 'Old and Obscure Words'. Vol I: 257pp scuff to top spine end. Vol II: 243pp. Vol III: 258pp bump to top corner of back board. Vol IV: 266 pp - couple of tiny top page edge tears where gilt has partly held a couple of pages together at the top edge. Vol V: 261pp more pronounced scuffing to an area of the front board and slight warp to boards. Vol VI: 252pp more pronounced pitting on back board engraved title has lost the bottom edge below the picture frame with its text. Vol VII: 236pp. Vol VIII: 248pp pitting to front board. Top corner creased at pages 107-143 of volume one and light scattered foxing to margins of a few pages throughout but are otherwise clean and unamrked. Marbled endpages have previous owner's sticker to top edge of front pastedown and light sunning to edges. Text block has light sunning to fore edge and top edge light scuffing to lower edge and light soiling to lower edge of volume two. All edges marbled. Boards are clean with light cracking and chipping to leather at spine bumping and moderate rubbing to corners and light rubbing to edges. Binding is tight boards slightly bow outward at fore edge. Many scholarly additions alongside the main text ie commentaries source notes critical notes bibliography etc etc. Presentable clean and sound copies with only minor wear. The gilt lettering to the spines is faded. No inscriptions. About 2400 pages in the 6 vols. - full collation on request. Not an ex library set but from the private collection of John Manning. Dr Manning was professor of English at the University of Wales Lampeter and the author of The Emblem Reaktion Books . In fair only condition but apart from some foxing of the prelims the pages are clean and bright. Folio size.
