Donald Grant Mitchell 1822-1908 was an essayist who was a Washington correspondent of the New York Morning Courier and Enquirer a connection in which he first employed his usual pseudonym of "Ik Marvel." He went to cover the revolution in Paris in 1848 and returned to New York in 1850 to edit a magazine satirizing society named the Lorgnette the twelve issues of which he published later as a book under the pseudonym of "John Timon." This is a book which contemplates country and farm writing throughout history in the works of the Greeks the Romans mediaeval writers in France and Germany and the British. Chipping to spine with small loss of material at top boards faded foxing to endpapers. Good condition. Charles Scribner hardcover
1882181Philadelphia: Bradley 1882. 20 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches. Good with a few minor tears expertly repaired using archival mending tape. This is a superb presentation of Lake Michigan and its two main bordering states. Each county is identified by its own color in the simple three color scheme. Most important is the presentation of sophisticated railroad networks in both states. Maps of Milwaukee and Detroit are printed on the verso of each of the two pages of the map. 1861281Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell 1861. 14 x 11 1/2 inches. Very good. This map is a beautiful example of the mapmakers art. Printed by lithography and hand colored at the time of publication it was produced for inclusion in the General Atlas. It is beautifully colored to designate the counties of each state. The Hannibal and St. Joseph cuts across the northern part of Missouri. It was the railroad that cut off the commerce of the Mississippi River from St. Louis and redirected it to Chicago via the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad. This map is in very good condition. S. 1867316Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell 1867. 13 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches. Very good. Vivid outline color is found on this map. It was colored at the time of publication almost 150 years ago. Both states are depicted on a smaller scale as found with the Mitchell atlas maps. Railroads prominently straddle both states. Railroads also run into the border states. The rail network was rapidly being homogenized in a post war movement to standardize the gauges at 4 feet eight and one-hall inches. Conceptually long distance travel by railroad was in the consciousness of a public impressed by the Civil War use of railroads. The railroad promoters of this reconstruction era focused on a connection to the west coast into which the railroads on this map could feed business. S. Augustus Mitchell unknown

The leather boards are stained and there is some wear at the top of the spine but the binding is sound. The paper despite some foxing has held up very well. There are a few interior stains. Many pages however are quite pristine. The book should be of interest to the student of New Engl and church history as it lays out the rules for church members and the duties expected of them. Some chapter headings include: Origins and History of the Congregational Church Principles Discipline Pastor's Duties Relations with Other Denominations.
