1875LTH20-C-15London: Privately Published c1875. Leather. Good. 10" by 7.5". Not Stated. A mounted collection of plates taken from a work by Gottfried Ehrenberg. With a letter explaining the origin of this volume. Consisting of 30 photographic plates believed to be photographs of the original plates in the work by Ehrenberg. The letter explains that the negatives have been scrapped and that this mounted copy is the only one remaining to the original compiler. Fortsetzung der mikrogeologischen Studien from which the plates originate is a work by German naturalist and microscopist Christian Gottfriend Ehrenberg. It is considered to a continuation of Ehrenbergs great work Mikrogeologie focusing particularly on the Radiolarian collections from Barbados. For nearly 30 years Ehrenberg examined samples of water soil sediment and rocks and described thousands of new species. He was particularly interested in diatoms but also studied and named many species of Radiolaria foraminifera and dinoflagellates. After his death in 1876 Ehrenberg's collections of microscopic organisms were deposited in the Museum fur Naturkunde at the University of Berlin. The Ehrenburg collection includes 40000 microscope preparations 5000 raw samples 3000 pencil and ink drawings and nearly 1000 letters of correspondence. In a half morocco binding. 1855002062Pagan Burma: n/a 1855. A rectangular footed wooden manuscript case sadaik from Burma constructed in three sections providing two separate compartments for manuscript storage. The exterior of the case is richly decorated overall with inscribed scenes outlined in red orange green and yellow lacquer over a black lacquer background. Unusually the box bears seven inscriptions in stylized Burmese script which provides much information on the dating of the box 1855 the donors' names Daw Mae Ngwe and U Sein of Hman Kyo Pagan City and the scenes depicted on the box. These are as follows: for the top panel the left side portrays King Ajatashatru consulting with his ministers regarding where he should seek repentance for his wicked deeds. To the left of center the King is kneeling before Venerable Kasyapa surrounded by attendant Bhikkhus apparently expressing remorse. A single robed figure to the far right Ven. Ananda sits in meditation seeking the Dharma. Around all four sides of the case there are processions of figures in courtly dress all culminating in the center of one long side where a single central figure the Brahmin Dona sits on an ornate platform facing a naga dragon. According to the inscription above him Dona is in the process of distributing the Buddha's relics. The interior surfaces of the three sections are covered in plain red lacquer; the base in black lacquer. The case would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript either a sutra on lontar palm or a Buddhist initiation manuscript kammavaca. There are minor chips and scratches commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good sound condition. The case dimensions are 67 cm. x 21.3 cm. x 22 cm. high. n/a. Lots of sweets - doughnuts puddings gingerbread whipt cream but also gammon salt cod cured mutton and tongue a long section on economical meat purchasing classic mock recipes for making mutton taste like venison a carry over from Britain where venison was reserved for wealthy owners of deer parks and mock turtle soup and sections on economy soap making. In contemporary 1800s Half-Leather with gilt titling/banding/small decorations and marbled paper boards. Quite an attractive book but scruffy and with damage/some loss to the leather. The boards and the leather are worn and badly scuffed to all 4 corners with loss to the leather and the spine edges have split on the top and bottom edges and are cracking all up the sides. Some small loss there and to the head/tail of the spine and to the rear inner edges. There is also some cracking of the leather to the centre of the spine but no loss. ALL hinges holding tight however and for it's age it looks quite reasonable. This is an oddity and the collation is difficult as the book consists of a most attractive Engraved Title Page to Volume V dated 1813 with a small rectangular engraved vignette 'View of Horseguards from St James Park'. This is followed by The Title/Contents page for 'The Royal Military Chronicle or British Officer's Monthly Register and Mentor for DECEMBER 1812' followed by a full page engraving of the bust of The Marquis of Wellington pages 92 to 168 pp : then 'The Royal Military Chronicle. ' for JANUARY 1813 pages 169 - 248 pp including a tissue guarded engraved Portrait of 'The Prince Regent' and a Large fold-out map of Russia in Europe : Then follows the Title page for 'The Life of Peter The Great Emperor of Russia Including the History of The Russian Empire During His Reign; with an Historical Sketch of the Most Important Events During That Period. A New Edition with Corrections - 167 pp - No Author given but published 1812 by J. The Large fold out Maps have grubby edges from being left 'proud' of the book but are all complete and are very clean good clear impressions printed on good quality paper. The first six pages in the book have some light old damp staining to the top on the blank margins and a couple of the later full page engravings also have a little old damp staining to the top sections. Plain endpapers. Generally the book is Internally VERY Good. This seems to have been a personally bound volume and going from the list of 'Embellishments' at the end of the Volume Index which lists 6 portraits starting with 'His Majesty George III' - it would appear that Volume 5 should have started with the Chronicle for November 1812 with his portrait. This is not bound in - but this issue has NOT been removed from this vol and given the Additional books in this volume relating to the content of these issues it has instead been bound in the previous volume by the former owner. At the time of listing I also have this volume Vol. 4 for sale.
