1819EXP3-C-1London: J J Stockdale 1819 . Cloth. Good. 8" by 4.5". Charles Williams. A scarce and interesting publication of humorous notes and anecdotes. Written by an anonymous author. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD 1906-1973 a noted book collector and diarist. Illustrations by Charles Williams. Williams was a British caricaturist and was chief caricaturist for S W Fores between 1799 and 1815. The title page states that the text is embellished with humorous coloured plates. The British Library copy shows the illustrated plates as coloured as well as throughout text. To our copy the plates have not yet been coloured and are also bound following the preface. Therefore it is possible that this copy was issued before publishing was complete or it is an early publisher's proof. In a quarter cloth binding with a hand written spine label. Externally sound with slight bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Spine has faded due to sunning. Internally binding tender for two of the plates otherwise generally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot throughout. Good J J Stockdale hardcover

Includes indexes for colours and stains plus separate index for diseases of Horned Cattle at the start of the volumes. Pages numbered by hand 1-72 are mostly filled with dye recipes and recipes to cure humans from page 109-142 are varnishes dyes and stains. Pages 148 - 200 have medicines for cattle and horses. 201 - 251 are blank and there are a few odd blank sheets in between the hand-written sheets. Vellum boards slightly bowed and soiled otherwise a very clean and sound copy of a unique volume. hardcover

Contemporary sprinkled calf with restorations; pp. xii 349 eight stipple-engraved portraits including frontispiece; binding worn; occasional light spotting or browning p. 173 with flaw to lower outer corner; otherwise a good copy.First edition of this anonymously published compendious biographical dictionary of remarkable women who defied gender roles or led independent lives and had a positive impact on their societies and the perception of women.Almost programmatically the volume opens with the biography of Alice a 106-year old African-American slave in Pennsylvania who remembered the days of William Penn and the first settlers. At the age of 95 she still could be seen in full gallop on her daily way to church. Alice of Dunk's Ferry as she became known died in 1802 in Bristol Pennsylvania and is considered now to have been the formost local aural historian for the eighteenth centrury. In the entry for Alice is a reference to a portrait ""See annexed engraving"" p. 3 which is not listed in the directions to the binder and strangely enough can only be found in the later 1804 Worcester Massachusetts edition printed by Isaiah Thomas 1749-1831 a New England pioneer politician writer publisher and printer to whom this text is sometimes ascribed.A precursor of this dictionary is the 1801 ""Eccentric Biography; Or Memoirs of Remarkable Characters"" published by T. Hurst. It contained biographies of both genders; however far fewer of women about a fifth of the almost one hundred biographies collected in this first edition. Among them are biographies of the cross-dressing Chevalier d'Eon Mme de Pompadour Angelica Kaufmann Mary Wollstonecraft the longest and most laudatory biographical entry in the volume Mary Astell Catherine I and II empresses of Russia and other outstanding female lives from history.See Sabin 21754 for the Boston edition of ""Eccentric Biography of Remarkable Characters"" and a Boston 1825 edition. unknown

It includes a number of menus from during the two world wars and a few referencing them a number of the menus appear to be from an RAF chef whose identification card is included in the collection. Like many collections of this sort while it was clearly collected first hand in part it's hard to tell which menus the collector gathered at the time and which were collected later or if perhaps the earlier group was passed down and added to. 146 pieces in all a remarkable collection that stretches from the height of 19th century French cuisine well into the 20th century - a tumultuous period in Europe to be sure but one where at least some people evidently continued to entertain. 18078763Scotland: Published for The Author 1807. First edition Privately Printed in a run of 120 copies only. Folio. 27pp text with 43 etchings as called for with tissue guards. Bound in contemporary full tree calf decorated and ruled in gilt with a large gilt central ellipse by Scott of Edinburgh. Later restoration to the binding has involved strengthening of corners extremities and a full respine with the original spine laid on. The work was done a while ago and was very professionally executed leaving the binding strong solid and still remarkably handsome. Internally clean with some gloriously wide margins a set of ink initials C.L.S. to the front pastedown and a large note pasted to the front flyleaf detailing the origins and provenance of the book:</p><p>"This volume belonged to Frances Lady Douglas sister of the 2nd Duke of Buccleuch and Wife of Archibald 1st Lord Douglas Son of 1st Marquess of Douglas created Peer 1790 of Douglas House Petersham. The C.L.S. opposite is Caroline Lucy Scott Daughter of the above Lord and Lady Douglas and wife of Admiral Sir George Scott of Gala. Lady Douglas was born in 1752. The Douglas Library where this copy entered trade was sold in 1931 at Petersham. M.H.G."</p><p>Elizabeth Countess of Sutherland as is evidenced by this work was an accomplished and skilled artist that much is undeniable. This accomplishment has been rather overshadowed by her role in the incredibly damaging and inhumane uprooting and impoverishment of thousands of her native Scottish tenants through the process of mass family eviction that is now known as The Highland Clearances. The historic occupants of the Sutherland estates traditionally smallholder tenants crofters and the like were evicted en masse men women and children to make way for "agricultural improvements" in the shape of highly profitable sheep farms and other projects not native to the area but guaranteed to swell the coffers of the Countess' estates. In part this highly skilled and evocative collection of engravings perfectly capturing the lonely and awe inspiring remoteness of the Orkneys was only enabled by a lifestyle of leisure and freedom that was directly funded by the misery of the very people whose land she so ably documented artistically. One of the most challenging exercises in separating the art from the artist we have thus far encountered.</p><p>The identity of M.H.G. is unknown but they clearly knew their stuff; a beautifully executed collection of etchings from an aristocratic origin and with an equally aristocratic provenance. Scarce and complicated. Published for The Author unknown

The Society of Writers to Her Majesty's signet is a private society of Scottish solicitors dating back to 1594 and part of the College of Justice. Writers to the Signet originally had special privileges in relation to the drawing up of documents which required to be signeted. The society is now an independent non regulatory association of solicitors however it still maintains the Category A listed Signet Library part of the Parliament house complex in Edinburgh. This is a private library which was opened in begun in 1810. In cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Externally sound with some bumping. Slightly rubbed. Internally firmly bound. One volume is in a black cloth as opposed to blue; this volume has wear to the head where the backstrip is lifting and internally its pages are age-toned and worn at the edges. Internally generally firmly bound; 'Islands in the British Sea' is strained noticeably to both hinges.
